EDWARDSVILLE — The Dawgs didn’t stop until the final out.
Tri-Valley kept its postseason bark alive with a dramatic seventh-inning comeback, plating four runs in the final frame to stun Holy Redeemer 6-5 in a PIAA Class AA first-round baseball game Monday at Wilkes University.
Trailing 3-2 entering the the top of the seventh, the Dawgs (20-6) strung together three hits, drew three walks, and used a key error to flip the script and earn their spot in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Gavin Klock’s two-run single highlighted the well-timed rally and cut the deficit to 5-4. Peyton Schley and Gavin Scheib then drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks to give Tri-Valley its first lead of the game.
Braeden Doyle, who took over on the mound in the fifth, shut the door in the final three innings. Doyle allowed five hits and two runs while striking out one to earn the win in relief of Klock, who tossed the first four innings. The win marks Doyle’s 10th pitching victory of the season (10-0).
The Dawgs tallied eight hits and drew eight walks in the win. Doyle and catcher Parker Hatter each collected two hits. Schley, Scheib, Hatter and Klock each drove in a run.
Holy Redeemer (19-5) jumped ahead early behind Zach Schultz’s RBI groundout in the first. The District 2 champion Royals extended their lead to 3-1 in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by Jett Kelsall and Nick Mazzarella.
Cody Quaglia finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Dom Marranca also had two hits for the Royals, who outhit Tri-Valley 10-8 but left seven on base.
Schultz suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. Starter Drew Cisney fanned five and walked five while yielding one run in four innings of work.
Tri-Valley will face District 6 champ Mount Union (19-4) on Thursday at a site and time to be announced. Mount Union defeated Montgomery 13-0 in five innings in the first round.
