WILKES-BARRE — Taylor Cawley pitched and hit Valley View past North Schuylkill 6-2 on Thursday in a PIAA Class 4A softball quarterfinal at Wilkes University.

Cawley went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits while striking out seven and walking two. At the plate, she went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Abbi Call also held a hot bat for the Cougars (22-2-1). She went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored; Kalli Karwowski scored three times out of the leadoff spot for Valley View.

Jordanna Frie led North Schuylkill by going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Olivia Jones went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Maria Monahan had a single and an RBI for the Spartans (18-6).

Valley View advances to face Northwestern Lehigh, a 6-4 winner over Interboro, in Monday’s state semifinals.

“Our girls battled until the very end but came up short against a great team today,” North Schuylkill coach Jack Flynn said. “The top four batters in Valley View’s lineup were great hitters. They scored four of the six runs. It was tough keeping them off the bases.

“Offensively, I think we had runners on base in five different innings,” Jack Flynn added. “Their pitcher did a great job keeping us off-balance by mixing in some riseballs and changeups. We just couldn’t capitalize and get some more of those runners in.

“Our girls never gave up. We had a chance in the bottom of the seventh by getting our leadoff on followed by two hits to score a run,” the coach continued. “We just couldn’t get any more in to score.

“Before the game, I asked all of the girls to give 100 percent, and if they did that and we lose, we have no reason to hang our heads,” Flynn said. “Each girl gave me that 100 percent, but we just came up short. I’m proud of what our team accomplished this year. We reached a lot of our preseason goals.

“We are truly going to miss our three seniors (Monahan, Lindsay Brouse, Kylie Meskunas), but we plan to be back here next year accomplishing the same things and hopefully more,” Jack Flynn said.
