The Schuylkill League community and Marian High School are mourning the loss of boys’ basketball coach Scott Murphy, who passed away Thursday. Murphy had been at the helm of the Colts for the past three seasons, guiding the program with a steady hand and a passion for the game that stretched well beyond the hardwood.

This past winter, Murphy led Marian to its first District 11 Class AA championship in more than a decade, capping a season in which the Colts finished 13-12 overall and 7-7 in the Schuylkill League. The run included a string of gritty playoff performances, showcasing the defensive toughness and composure that had become hallmarks of his teams. He compiled an overall record 42-33, capped with a D-11 Class AA title, over his three-year tenure as head coach.

Murphy’s coaching career with the Colts began long before his head role. From 2005 to 2010, he served as an assistant, helping the team capture the 2009-10 District 11 Class A crown. He later spent five seasons as an assistant at North Schuylkill before returning to Marian as JV coach in 2021. Elevated to head coach in 2022, Murphy posted three straight winning seasons, with records of 14-10 in 2022-23, 15-11 in 2023-24, and a gritty 13-12 mark in this past season’s championship campaign.

Players, alumni, fellow coaches and the community remember him as a mentor who valued character as much as skill. Whether in victory or defeat, Murphy preached teamwork, preparation and pride in wearing the Marian uniform.
