STATE COLLEGE — Overall, their scores were good.
The problem was that at the PIAA Golf Championships, good scores leave you looking up at a lot of other golfers on the leaderboard.
Four Schuylkill League golfers finished Monday’s Day 1 of the PIAA Golf Championships in the middle of the Class AA pack after up-and-down rounds on the par-72 Penn State White Course.
In the boys’ tournament, Tamaqua freshman Sam Vinc ended the day in a six-way tie for 22nd after shooting a 5-over-par 77. Schuylkill Haven junior and District 11 champion Alan Evans was in a five-way tie for 41st after carding an 8-over 80 and North Schuylkill senior Jude Maziekas was in a four-way tie for 54th with a 12-over 84.
In the girls’ field, Lourdes junior and District 4 champion Vivian Reiprish was in a three-way tie for 18th place with a 12-over 84.
Wind played a key role in Monday’s first round, delaying the start of the tournament by one hour. Evans (10:20) and Reiprish (11:30) started on No. 1, while Maziekas (10:20) and Vinc (10:30) started on No. 10.
Vinc had a hot hand early, sitting at 1-under through four holes with three birdies and a double bogey. Vinc then rattled off four straight pars before a double-bogey 7 left him at 1-over 37 at the turn.
The freshman carded a bogey on both No. 1 and No. 2 to get to 3-over, then rattled off six straight pars before closing with a double-bogey 6 on No. 9.
Vinc is nine strokes behind the leader, Scranton Prep’s Cole Powell, who shot a 4-under 68. Luke Sikora of Greensburg Salem is second at 3-under 69.
Evans, who was tied for the lead after Day 1 last year, finished the day with three birdies — No. 1, No. 8, No. 11 — six pars, seven bogeys and two double bogeys. He had a 41 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine.
Maziekas also birdied his first hole, the par-5 No. 10, but then ran into trouble with a bogey on No. 11, double bogey on No. 12 and a 7 on the par-3 No. 14. The Spartan senior was at 9-over 45 at the turn but it picked it up late, shooting 3-over 39 on the front.
Reiprish had one birdie on the day, shooting a 2 on the par-3 No. 5. She had seven bogeys, eight pars and two disaster holes, carding 7 on the par-4 No. 2 and a 7 on the par 4 No. 18.
Reiprish is 16 strokes off the lead, which is shared by three girls’ golfers, St. Joseph’s Madison Koshko, Shady Side Academy’s Alyssa Zhang and West Middlesex Kate Sowers, all with a 4-under-par 68.
Day 2 of the 72-hole tournament is Tuesday. Local tee times: Vinc, 10:30 a.m., No. 1; Maziekas, 10:40 a.m., No. 10; Evans, 11:10 a.m., No. 10; Reiprish, 11:30 a.m., No. 1.
