AA Schuylkill Haven, Class A Fort Cherry upended in district playoffs

Week 13 was not kind to a pair of No. 1 teams ranked in the PennLive.com High School Football State Rankings.

Class AA top-ranked Schuylkill Haven and Class A No. 1 Fort Cherry both lost in their respective district playoffs Friday. Both previously undefeated, Schuylkill Haven was upended by Williams Valley 34-31, while Fort Cherry, the top seed in the District 7 Class A playoffs, was upset by Laurel 24-14.

This week’s Class AA poll is a major shakeup as the top three teams from last week — Schuylkill Haven, Troy and Bishop McCort — all lost to end their seasons. Farrell, from District 10, takes over the top spot, followed by Southern Columbia and Williams Valley.

Schuylkill Haven remains in the Class AA poll at No. 4, while North Schuylkill remains a Team to Watch in the Class 3A poll.

Heading into this weekend’s state quarterfinals, there are 14 unbeaten teams left in Pennsylvania: Harrisburg (12-0) and Easton (13-0) in Class 6A; Peters Township (12-0), Chester (13-0), Springfield-Delco (13-0) and Hollidaysburg (13-0) in Class 5A; Twin Valley (12-0), Shamokin (13-0), Susquehanna Township (12-0) and North Pocono (13-0) in Class 4A; Avonworth (12-0), Northwestern Lehigh (13-0) and Imani Christian (12-0) in Class 3A; and Port Allegany (12-0) in Class A.
