Felicia Bro, Mahanoy Area girls' basketball

MAHANOY CITY — Felicia Bro gives Mahanoy Area the star power that great basketball teams have.

She also has a great supporting cast.

It’s a combination that has piled up five straight victories to open the season after the Golden Bears downed Williams Valley 50-34 in a Schuylkill League Division II game Tuesday at the Joe Alansky Gymnasium.

Bro poured in a game-high 22 points, Ella Connolly added 12 and Naomi Kowalick netted 11 as Mahanoy Area remained unbeaten on the season at 5-0.

In a span of five days, the Bears have knocked off both of last season’s Division II co-champions, winning last Friday at Marian and Tuesday against the Vikings.

The wins leave the Bears at 4-0 in the Division II standings, one-half game ahead of unbeaten Lourdes (5-0, 3-0). The Red Raiders’ game with Marian was postponed until Dec. 30 after Fillies’ coach Jeanette Shafer Barron stepped down Tuesday (see related story).

Bro, Connolly and Kowalick combined for 13 points in a 16-8, first-quarter run that put Mahanoy Area ahead for good. The Bears led 30-18 at intermission.

Mallory Miller and Ireland Kasper each had 14 points for Williams Valley, which sliced the deficit to 39-31 entering the fourth. The Bears, however, closed on an 11-3 run with Bro scoring nine of the 11 points.
