HS Swimming Wrap: Raiders’ Wilson, Bears’ Brown have record-breaking swims

Tamaqua, Blue Mountain girls remain unbeaten

TAMAQUA — Savannah Wilson broke the Tamaqua pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke as the Blue Raiders defeated North Schuylkill 98-69 in a Schuylkill League girls’ swimming dual meet Tuesday.

Wilson was clocked in 1:07.97 in the event, her best time of the season. She added a victory in the 200 IM and swam on two winning relays for the unbeaten Blue Raiders (5-0, 4-0 SL).

Shaylee Gormley (200 free, 100 free) and Kate Behun (500 free, 100 back) were also double winners for Tamaqua, while Audrey Nattress took first in the 100 fly.

Tatiana Salefski (50 free) and Annabelle Bennett (diving) earned wins for North Schuylkill (3-2, 2-2).

Mahanoy Area’s Lily Brown broke the school record in the 200 IM during Tuesday’s meet against Pottsville, posting a time of 2:19.15. The previous record was 2:19.97, which was set in 2009 (submitted photo).

MAHANOY CITY — The Golden Bears’ Lily Brown broke a 16-year-old school record in the 200 IM as the Crimson Tide edged Mahanoy Area in a Schuylkill League dual meet.

Brown won the event in 2:19.15, breaking the previous mark of 2:19.97 set in 2009. She also won the 100 backstroke and helped the Bears (1-4, 1-4) win a pair of relays. Kendall Kardisco added a victory in the 100 breaststroke.

Gianna Laselva (200 free, 500 free) and Catherine Mohl (50 free, 100 free) each won twice for Pottsville (1-3, 1-3), which earned their first win of the season by winning the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — The Eagles used their depth and a sweep of the relays to down the Hurricanes.

Isabella Lafko (200 free), Hailey Scheuer (diving), Alayna Hensel (100 fly), Emma Daynorovicz (500 free) and Lola Machamer (100 back) earned individual wins for Blue Mountain (4-0, 3-0 SL).

Hope Stauffer (200 IM, 100 free) and Cali Stauffer (50 free, 100 breast) each won two events for Schuylkill Haven (4-3, 2-2).

Boys’ Swimming

Blue Mountain 123, Schuylkill Haven 40

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Brody Moyer and Porter Sarnes each won two individual events and swam on two winning relays as the Eagles cruised past the Hurricanes in an early season battle of boys’ unbeatens.

Moyer took first in the 200 IM and 100 fly, edging Schuylkill Haven’s Ethan Miller in the latter in a matchup of two of the league’s best swimmers in that event. Sarnes won the 50 free and 100 back.

Seth Nester (200 free), Aidan Varney (100 free) and Gabe Kamarousky (500 free) added wins for Blue Mountain (4-0, 3-0 SL).

Miller earned the only victory for Schuylkill Haven (4-3, 3-1), winning the 100 breaststroke.

TAMAQUA — Brendan Fetterolf continued his breakout season with a pair of individual wins as the Spartans beat the Blue Raiders in a Schuylkill League dual meet.

A freshman, Fetterolf won the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle while swimming on two winning relays for North Schuylkill (3-2, 2-2). David Luna (200 IM), Nick Weremedic (100 fly), Fabrizio Mangianello (100 free) and Owen Mentzer (100 back) added wins for the Spartans.

Thomas Graham (200 free) and Brandon Temarantz (100 breast) scored victories for Tamaqua (1-4, 1-3).
