HS Hoops Roundup: Alvarez, Bowers lead Pottsville past Shamokin in OT; Haven, Minersville cruise

Ryder Bowers, Pottsville boys' basketball

SHAMOKIN — Christian Alvarez and Ryder Bowers delivered in the biggest moments as Pottsville outlasted Shamokin in an overtime non-league thriller Monday night on the road.

Alvarez scored a game-high 24 points and Bowers added 19 as the Crimson Tide pulled away in the extra session to earn a hard-fought victory.

Pottsville outscored Shamokin 19-10 in overtime after the teams battled through four tight quarters that featured multiple  momentum swings.

Alvarez went 6-for-7 from the line and consistently attacked off the dribble, while Bowers knocked down timely perimeter shots to stretch the margin.

Chris Hobbs chipped in nine points for Pottsville, and the Crimson Tide finished 16-of-20 from the foul line, a decisive edge in a physical game.

Shamokin was led by Xavier Paul’s 20 points, with Colin Steinhart adding 11, but the Indians couldn’t keep pace once overtime began.

TAMAQUA — Alan Evans, Max Heim and Justin Watcher paced a balanced Schuylkill Haven attack in a non-league win.

Evans finished with a game-high 21 points, Heim chipped in 18 and Watcher added 13 as the Hurricanes built separation with a strong second and third quarter.

Tamaqua was led by Gavin Edmonds’ 19 points.

ANNVILLE — Shazier Bethea dominated from start to finish as Minersville rolled past Pine Grove in a non-league game at Lebanon Valley College.

Bethea poured in a game-high 27 points, knocking down five 3-pointers, while Nolan Plesnarski added 14 and Chase Zimerofsky chipped in 11. Minersville opened the game on a 17-4 run and never looked back.

Hayden Felty led Pine Grove with 17 points in the loss.

POTTSVILLE — Trey Keating delivered another standout performance to lift Nativity past Central Mountain in a non-league matchup.

Keating scored a game-high 31 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Hilltoppers pulled away in the second half.

Nick Clarke added 12 points for Nativity, while Layne Pasker chipped in 10.

Mengel finished with 14 points and Kacilowicz matched him with 14 as the Spartans used balanced scoring and defensive pressure to take control early.

North Schuylkill held the Pirates to just four points in the opening quarter.

LAPORTE — Brighton Scicchitano and Trebor Moore delivered late as Lourdes escaped Sullivan County with an overtime non-league victory.

Scicchitano scored 13 points and Moore added 11, including two key 3-pointers, as the Red Raiders edged Sullivan County in a back-and-forth contest.

Lourdes outscored Sullivan County 5-4 in overtime to seal the win.

WYOMISSING — Cohen Kirby and Cohen Werner kept Blue Mountain within striking distance, but Wyomissing closed strong for a non-league win over the Eagles.

Werner and Kirby scored 11 points apiece, while Tyeirre Meade and Beck Henninger both added nine as the Eagles battled throughout. Wyomissing used a late fourth-quarter push to create separation.

Wyomissing was led by Dom Arguilles’ game-high 26 points.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Kylie Siket scored a game-high 16 points as the Hurricanes downed the Bears in a non-league game at the CACL Center.

Siket had 12 of her points and Audrey Hutchinson collected 11 of her 13 points in the middle quarters as Schuylkill Haven overcame an early 8-5 deficit with a 35-13 run to take control.

Mckenna Runkle and Ava Terefencko each added nine points for the Hurricanes.

MAHANOY CITY — Ella Connolly tallied a game-high 25 points as the Golden Bears cruised past Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter in a non-league game at the Joe Alansky Gymnasium.

Felicia Bro drained four 3-pointers in the first quarter for Mahanoy Area, which led 22-8 early. Bro finished with 18 points. Connolly netted 16 of her points in the first half, helping the Bears to a 41-13 lead at intermission.

STATE COLLEGE — The Spartans (6-2) dropped their second straight game at the State College Holiday Tournament, falling to the Class 6A Lions.

Downingtown West (10-1), which beat North Schuylkill 51-32 on Monday, captured the title of the three-team tournament with a 58-56 win over State College later Tuesday.
