North Schuylkill grabs No. 2 seed from Division I

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — North Schuylkill coach Rich Wetzel commented after last week’s loss to Schuylkill Haven that “sometimes the ball goes in the basket, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Monday, the ball went in the basket for the Spartans.

Mya Conti scored a game-high 27 points and Monica Selgrade added 12 as North Schuylkill rolled past Tamaqua 51-28 in the Schuylkill League Division I finale for both teams at the Cesari-Hope Gymnasium.

Both teams had already clinched Schuylkill League playoff berths coming into Monday’s game, but the game had an impact on playoff seeding. With the win, the Spartans (14-6, 11-3 D-I) are the No. 2 seed from Division I, while Tamaqua (16-6, 10-4) is the No. 3 seed.

In Saturday’s Schuylkill League girls’ quarterfinals at Martz Hall, North Schuylkill will face Division II third-place Marian (12-9) at 2 p.m., followed by Tamaqua taking on Division II runner-up Mahanoy Area (17-5) at 3:30 p.m.

Conti finished with four 3-pointers, scoring 11 points in the first half as North Schuylkill opened the game on a 14-4 run and led 27-12 at halftime.

Lauren Ligenza led Tamaqua with 11 points while Millie Black pulled down 14 rebounds.

Schuylkill Haven 50, Pine Grove 36

PINE GROVE — Mckenna Runkle poured in 18 points and Audrey Hutchinson tallied 17 as the Hurricanes captured their 10th straight victory with a Division I win over the Cardinals.

Hutchinson had all 17 of her points in the first half as the Schuylkill League Division I champion Hurricanes ran out to a 34-17 halftime lead. Runkle drained three of Haven’s six 3-pointers, scoring nine points in both halves.

Hollyn Sampson led Pine Grove with 14 points, while Lainey Fidler added 10.

MINERSVILLE — Hailey Place netted a game-high 18 points to pace three players in double figures as the Eagles closed their regular season with a Division I win over the Miners at the Thomas Fitzpatrick Gymnasium.

Karley Koch added 16 points and Mila Fleagle collected 10 for Blue Mountain, which finished 11-11 and will compete in the District 11 Class 4A playoffs. Place had 11 of her points in the first half as Blue Mountain built a 26-12 halftime lead.

Jenna Cullen drained three 3-pointers and had 16 points to lead Minersville.

Pottsville 48, Panther Valley 42

LANSFORD — Jo Barnhart paced a trio of double-digit scorers with 15 points as the Crimson Tide outlasted the Panthers in a Division I contest.

Lauren Brennan added 11 points and Myla Fegley netted 10 for Pottsville, which outscored Panther Valley 22-16 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. The victory enhanced Pottsville’s chances of qualifying for the District 11 Class 5A playoffs as it moved the Tide into fourth place in the ratings.

The Tide shot 14-for-24 from the foul line in the final frame and 17-for-31 for the game. The teams combined for 53 free-throw attempts.

For Panther Valley, Morgan Orsulak led all scorers with 22 points and had 12 rebounds and four blocks. Caroline Breslin added 13 points.

POTTSVILLE — The Red Raiders completed an undefeated Schuylkill League Division II slate with an easy win over the Golden Girls atop Lawton’s Hill.

Sophia Karlovich scored 15 points and Kylla Sandri added 10 for Lourdes, which held an opponent under 20 points for the 10th time this season. The Red Raiders have won 14 straight games and haven’t lost in 2026.

Emmalee Pinkey scored a team-high seven points to lead Nativity, which finished its season 2-20.

Ella Connolly added 16 points for Mahanoy Area, which scored all its points in three quarters.
