HS Hoops Roundup: Mahanoy Area holds off Tamaqua; Weatherly, Shenandoah Valley earn wins

TAMAQUA — It wasn’t over until the final horn.
Mahanoy Area built an early cushion and then withstood a late Tamaqua push to close the Schuylkill League schedule with a 57-54 Division I victory Friday night.
The Golden Bears set the tone in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 21-14 lead behind balanced scoring and strong guard play. Mahanoy Area maintained control through the middle quarters, pushing the margin back to seven entering the fourth.
Tamaqua made one final run, trimming the deficit to one possession late, but Mahanoy Area answered with key stops down the stretch to hold on.
Cam Smith led the Golden Bears with a game-high 20 points, while Nico DiCasimirro added 12 and Ryan Zilker chipped in 14. Connor Bowman finished with eight in a balanced effort.
Tamaqua was paced by Gavin Edmonds, who poured in 22 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. Jakin Tamagini added 16, but the Raiders couldn’t overcome the early deficit despite outscoring Mahanoy Area in the fourth quarter.

WEATHERLY — Corbin Wagner netted a game-high 21 points and Ian McKeegan scored 19 points as Weatherly closed strong to pull out a non-league win over Palmerton.
The Wreckers trailed entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Bombers 21-13 in the final frame to secure the victory. Wagner hit four 3-pointers, while McKeegan went 4-for-4 at the free-throw line to help Weatherly close it out.

HEGINS — Tri-Valley’s two seniors, Avery Miller and Ava Snyder, finished their careers with strong performances as the Dawgs dropped a non-league game to the Trojans.
Miller drained four 3-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points while pulling down 11 rebounds and blocking five shots. Snyder went 11-for-14 from the foul line and scored 13 points while collecting 15 rebounds and three blocks.
Upper Dauphin used a 13-4 run in the second quarter to take control. The win helps the Trojans in their quest to capture the final berth in the District 3 Class 3A Tournament. Tri-Valley finishes its season 5-17.

MILLVILLE — The Red Raiders closed the regular season with their 15th straight victory, moving to 21-1 overall with a non-league rout of Millville.
Hannah Lokitis paced Lourdes with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophia Karlovich added 11 points and nine boards, Onaleigh Barnes buried four 3-pointers for 12 points and Kylla Sandri tallied 10 points.
The Red Raiders are off until Tuesday, when they host the North Schuylkill-Marian winner in the Schuylkill League semifinals at 6 p.m. at Martz Hall.

WEATHERLY — Kelly Reiner scored 11 of her game-high 14 points in the first half as the Wreckers downed the Rams in a non-league game.
Reiner’s scoring spurt helped Weatherly take a 20-5 halftime lead. Maci Kane added 10 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the foul line. As a team, the Wreckers were 17-for-27 from the stripe.
