MINERSVILLE — North Schuylkill can hit. Everybody who follows Schuylkill League softball knows that.

The Spartans’ bats took center stage once again Saturday as North Schuylkill defeated Minersville 19-0 in five innings in a non-league game at Ken Schneck Field.

Clubbing 17 hits, including three doubles and two home runs, North Schuylkill took command early and never let up. Eight different Spartans recorded at least one hit, with Lyza Holmes, Brigid Flynn, Jordanna Frie and Gianna Capone smacking three apiece.

The runs started in the top of the first inning when Capone roped a three-run double down the left-field line for a quick 3-0 lead. In the second inning, Flynn launched a three-run home run to left field to double the lead to 6-0. Flynn has slugged three home runs in the first two games of the season.

Capone crushed a solo homer to lead off the third, and Leah Wolfe added a two-run single in the fourth inning. The spartans sent 13 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring seven runs on six hits.

“We knew we had a good group of girls who were going to hit the ball well throughout the year, and we started off the first two games hitting very well,” North Schuylkill coach Jack Flynn said. “That’s one of the things we take pride in. We knew, with our returning lineup, it was going to be a great team hitting one through nine. I think we can do that throughout the whole season.

“If we clean up our errors, we’re hopefully going to be back where we were last year.”

North Schuylkill (2-0) advanced to the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals last season.

“We’re a pretty good team right now, but our goal is to be great at the end of the year,” Jack Flynn said.

Flynn led the way by going 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and five RBIs. In the circle, Flynn hurled a two-hit shutout, striking out six and walking none.

Capone added a 3-for-4 day with a double, a homer, three runs and three RBIs.

Holmes went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Frie went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
