HS Boys’ Track: Miller outduels Guers in Eagles’ win over Spartans

Blue Mountain, Pottsville, Minersville notch Division I wins; Haven edges Nativity in Division II opener
ORWIGSBURG — Round 1 goes to Luke Miller.
The North Schuylkill senior edged Blue Mountain’s Chase Guers in a battle of two of the state’s top sprinters Tuesday in a Schuylkill League Division I boys’ track and field meet at the Eagles’ Nest.
The St. Joseph’s-bound Miller won the 100-meter dash in 10.67 seconds, with Guers second at 10.76. Entering the day, the fastest 100 time in the state according to MileSplit PA was 10.70 posted by Kamal Crockett of Bangor.
While Miller took first in the 100 showdown, Guers and his Eagles got the final laugh with a 102-47 victory in the league opener for both squads. Blue Mountain won 14 of 18 events, including sweeps of three field events.
Guers, a junior, won three events, taking first in the 200, long jump and triple jump. His winning time of 21.73 in the 200 meters ranks No. 1 in the state according to MileSplit PA.
Grayson Meck (1600, 3200) and Rafael Liranzo (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) were also double-winners for Blue Mountain (1-1, 1-0 D-I). Xavier McNally’s victory in the high jump was the only other individual win for North Schuylkill (1-1, 0-1 D-I).

Pottsville 100, Tamaqua 50
POTTSVILLE — Donovan Durham swept the hurdles and the Crimson Tide used a dominant performance in the field events to down the Blue Raiders in a Division I matchup at Veterans Stadium.
Ty Karkanica (100) and Shay Strencosky (200) each won an individual events and ran on two winning relays for Pottsville (1-0, 1-0 D-I).
The Crimson Tide outscored Tamaqua 51-12 in the field events, with Brogan Rooney (high jump), Malachi Kollie (long jump), Ryan Beltz (shot put), Ryan Murphy (discus), Pete Scharadin (javelin) and Killian Bressler (pole vault) notching victories.

Minersville sweeps tri-meet
MINERSVILLE — Paiten LaPoint, Johnny Burgess, Jack Purcell and Chase Zimerofsky each won two individual events as the Miners rolled to a sweep of Pine Grove and Lincoln Leadership.
Minersville downed Pine Grove 110-29 in their Schuylkill League Division I meet. The Miners beat Lincoln 126-13 while the Cardinals topped Lincoln 87-34.
LaPoint raced to victory in the 100 and 200, while Burgess won the 800 and 1600. Purcell swept the hurdles while Zimerofsky took the long and triple jumps.
The Miners (1-0, 1-0 D-I) won 15 of 17 scored events. Dru Herber (3200) and James Barra (shot put) notched wins for Pine Grove (0-1, 0-1 D-I).

Hurricanes edge Green Wave, roll past Wreckers
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — The Hurricanes pulled out a 74-67 Schuylkill League Division II win over the Green Wave by winning the meet’s final event, the 1600 relay, in a photo finish.
Schuylkill Haven won the race, and the five points that go with it, in 3:47.06. Nativity was second in 3:47.13.
The Hurricanes and Green Wave both notched Division II wins over Weatherly in the tri-meet at Rotary Field. Schuylkill Haven beat Weatherly 123-18, while Nativity scored a 130-5 victory.
Niko Carestia and Ethan Kline were double-winners for Schuylkill Haven (1-0, 1-0 D-II). Carestia won the 100 and javelin, while Kline captured the shot put and discus. The Hurricanes won 12 of the 17 events.
Shane Meyer swept the three distance races for Nativity, placing first in the 800, 1600 and 3200.
