Lasting legacy.

Those two words capture the essence of the impact the three major award winners on the 2025-26 T102SportsNow.com All-Area Wrestling Team brought to their respective programs.

Panther Valley senior Brenda Banks earned Girls’ Wrestler of the Year; Pottsville senior Terrell McFarland won Boys’ Wrestler of the Year; and Tri-Valley’s Dave Boltz received Coach of the Year honors.

Girls’ Wrestler of the Year

Brenda Banks, Panther Valley

When you’re building the “Mount Rushmore” of Schuylkill League wrestling, Banks certainly holds one of the four spots.

She put together a career like no other boy or girl in league history. She won four state championships (the last three PIAA-sanctioned) and posted a career record of 110-2.

She went 37-0 this season, with 31 falls, five forfeit victories and one major decision, Thirty of those pins came in the first period.

For her career, Banks collected three District 11 championships, four regional titles and four state crowns. She totalled 84 pins.

Without a doubt, Banks has set the bar exceedingly high for all wrestlers who will follow her.

Boys’ Wrestler of the Year

Terrell McFarland, Pottsville

As a senior, Terrell McFarland finally enjoyed good health. Well, mostly. Until the final few weeks of the season, that is.

Making the most of his final high school season, McFarland wrote his name into the Pottsville High and Schuylkill League record books.

Posting a 45-4 record, McFarland raised his career mark to 141-19, ranking him fourth on the Tide’s all-time wins list.

He placed third in Class 3A at both the District 11 and Northeast Regional Championships to earn a second trip to the PIAA Championships. McFarland, hampered by injury by this point, went 1-2 at states.

Still, he finished his Pottsville High wrestling career as a four-time District 11 placewinner (3rd-3rd-4th-3rd) and a three-time regional placer (2nd-5th-DNP injury-3rd).

One of the most prolific throwers and pinners in Schuylkill League history, McFarland capped his career with 102 victories by fall.

In January, he became a member of an exclusive club by capturing his fourth gold medal at the Schuylkill League Wrestling Championships. To top off the weekend, the coaches voted him as the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.

Coach of the Year

Dave Boltz, Tri-Valley

Boltz’s 23rd season ranks as one of his best. It certainly ranks near the top of the most enjoyable. Guiding a squad of dedicated grapplers, Boltz often smiled as he talked about how much fun he was having coaching this group.

The results followed on the mat.

Wrestling their typical difficult schedule, the Bulldogs defeated in dual meets all of their league and nearby rivals: Blue Mountain, North Schuylkill, Line Mountain, Williams Valley, Pine Grove and Mount Carmel.

At midseason, they finished second at the Schuylkill League Wrestling Championships. The Dawgs notched 11 placewinners, including champions Owen Wolfgang and Jaxson Bruso. Those seniors also surpassed 100 career victories during the season. Tri-Valley had two champions, two runners-up, one third, three fourths, two fifths and one sixth at leagues.

At the District 11 Team Wrestling Championships, the Dawgs went where they never went before: to the finals. Tri-Valley defeated Mahanoy Area 50-19 and Northwestern Lehigh 45-27 to qualify for the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships for the first time in school history. The run ended with losses to Saucon Valley (52-21) and Conwell-Egan (46-24), but Tri-Valley posted an overall record of 17-5 and finished among the top 20 Class AA teams in the state.

Included was the 250th dual-meet victory in Boltz’s career (250-180).

In the postseason, Boltz guided five Tri-Valley wrestlers to regionals and Wolfgang and Hunter Updegrave to states. In all, 10 Dawgs grapplers won at least 20 bouts apiece this season, showing marked improvement from November to March.
