SHIPPENSBURG — Chase Guers had a day he’ll never forget.
Luke Miller, Alexa Giuffre and Maggie Hoffman-Long made sure their final day as a high school athlete was one to remember.
The quartet combined to capture five medals Saturday on Day 2 of the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
Guers garnered gold in the Class 3A 100 meters in the morning, then seized silver in the 200 meters in the afternoon.
Miller was seventh in that same 200 meters, while Giuffre and Hoffman-Long each secured their second medals of the weekend in field events. Giuffre grabbed fifth in the Class 3A girls’ long jump while Hoffman-Long took eighth in the Class AA girls’ triple jump.
All total, Schuylkill League athletes garnered eight medals in the two-day state championships at Seth Grove Stadium. Here’s a recap of Saturday’s action involving Schuylkill League athletes:

Golden Guers
Guers started the day off with a bang by racing to gold in the Class 3A 100 meters.
Seeded third coming into the weekend, the Blue Mountain junior won Friday’s prelims with a time of 10.52. Running in the middle of Saturday’s final, he used a steady burst of speed in the middle of the race to win the race in 10.61 seconds (see related story: https://www.t102sportsnow.com/2026/05/23/piaa-boys-track-blue-mountains-guers-claims-3a-100-meter-gold/).
Garnet Valley’s Jonathan Wert was second in 10.66 seconds, followed by Owen J. Roberts’ Matthew Gregory (10.67), Wilson West Lawn’s Damian Greer (10.68), Parkland’s Radnor Rowlands (10.77), Wilkes-Barre Area’s Timothy Leonard (10.78), Bishop Shanahan’s Colin Cregan (10.84) and Bensalem’s Frank Bediako (10.85).

Guers’ bid to win a second gold medal Saturday came up just short in the 200 meters.
Guers got out to a good start but couldn’t hold off Owen J. Roberts speedster Matthew Gregory over the final 10-15 meters.
Gregory won the race in 21.29, with Guers second in 21.58.
“Obviously a good race, obviously a great outcome to come out with second place,” Guers said. “You want gold, everyone pushes for gold.
“Came off the turn felt good, then Matt Gregory on my right, he’s a hell of a kid. He’s always top end, you always have to worry about him on the backstretch. He had a heck of a race.”
Guers was overjoyed to grab two medals on a day that featured temperatures in the low 50s, a persistent rain that was hard at times and a steady wind that made it feel like early March instead of mid-May.
“You can’t be mad about this day with the weather and all that,” Guers said. “Was definitely pretty good day. Couldn’t have been better, but not mad about it.”

Miller makes most of opportunity
Miller earned the final spot in the 3A 200-meter final by placing eighth in Friday’s preliminaries in 21.76. While his time was a tick slower Saturday at 21.92, the North Schuylkill senior was able to move one step up the podium by placing seventh.
After Gregory and Guers, Parkland’s Radnor Rowlands (21.64) was third, followed by Bensalem’s Frank Bediako (21.65), La Salle College’s James Mahoney (21.78), Garnet Valley’s Jonathan Wert (21.88), Miller and Wilkes-Barre Area’s Timothy Leonard (22.28).
Miller was all smiles as he adorned his state medal, the final cap to a sensational high school career that saw him break a bevy of North Schuylkill records in both football and track and field and win the Pennsylvania indoor track state championship in the 60 meters.
“It felt good,” Miller said of his race. “Being in Lane 8, it’s a tough place to run. My mentality was just get off that curve and run as hard as I could.
“It feels good to race against the guys like Timothy, Guers and Wert. They’re great guys. I’ve raced against them indoors, outdoors. It’s a good way to end my high school career. I’m happy with it.”

Field generals
Giuffre and Hoffman-Long had to battle the wet conditions and rock-hard jumping pits during the afternoon session but were able to overcome the elements to each earn their second state medals of the weekend.
Giuffre was fifth in the Class 3A long jump, adding to the fifth the Pottsville senior took in the triple jump Saturday.
Like she did Saturday, Giuffre got stronger as the event progressed. She had a strong jump of 18-2 in her first attempt, which advanced her to the finals in fifth. She then recorded jumps of 17-7.5, 18-5.25 and a season’s best 18-8.5 to close out her career.
Kennett’s Aydriane Bowden won the gold medal with a state-record jump of 20-4.75. She was followed by Bensalem’s Evette Wesseh (19-0.75), Norristown’s Jade Webb (19-0.25) and Parkland’s Kaley Seide (18-9.5).
“I’m happy,” Giuffre said. “I still didn’t jump a PR all season (it’s 18-9), but I got close to it today. One of the closest I’ve been all season so I’m happy with it.
“I told myself before I was about to jump that this is the last time I’m going to do anything in high school, just go out, no matter if I foul or I’m behind the board, just give it my all. I did and I got close. I’m happy winning two medals.”

Hoffman-Long wasn’t happy with her jumps in the Class AA triple jump but was pleased to capture her second medal. She took fourth in the AA long jump Saturday.
The Minersville senior posted her best jump of 36-10 on her third attempt, which advanced her to the finals. Her final three jumps were 35-1.5, 36-2.5 and 36-3.25.
Mid Valley’s Olivia Thomas won gold at 39-11.5.
“A state medal is a state medal and it was better than I was seeded,” said Hoffman-Long who entered Saturday’s triple jump seeded 10th. “I will take it.
“It’s a great way (to end my high school career). I never had a state medal and last year was my first time. Coming home with two this time, it makes me feel pretty great about my high school career.”
