FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Blue Mountain threw a wrench into North Schuylkill’s Schuylkill League Division I plans Wednesday night.

Callie Peel scored a game-high 19 points as the Eagles scored their biggest win of the season with a 46-41 victory over the Spartans at the Cesari-Hope Gymnasium.

Peel and Karley Koch each had six points in a 14-7, second-quarter spurt that gave Blue Mountain a 24-18 halftime lead. Peel then helped the Eagles ice it, hitting 6-of-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to keep Blue Mountain ahead.

Koch finished with nine points, Hailey Place added eight and Mila Fleagle tallied seven for Blue Mountain, which avenged a 49-34 loss to the Spartans on Dec. 19 in Orwigsburg. The Eagles had lost four of their last six games heading into Wednesday’s contest.

Jadelin Stitzer paced North Schuylkill with 12 points, while Mya Conti added 10.

The Eagles’ victory has a big impact on the Schuylkill League Division I playoff picture.

First, the loss by North Schuylkill drops the Spartans (12-5, 10-2) one-half game behind Schuylkill Haven (15-4, 10-1) for first place in the division heading into Thursday’s showdown at the CACL Center.

The loss snaps a five-game win streak for North Schuylkill. The Spartans’ 41 points were their lowest since a Jan. 3 loss to Central Columbia.

For Blue Mountain, the victory keeps its slim Schuylkill League playoff hopes alive. The Eagles (9-10, 7-5) trail Tamaqua (13-5, 8-3) by 1.5 games for the third playoff spot but were swept by the Blue Raiders in their two Division I meetings. Blue Mountain has games remaining with Pine Grove and Minersville; Tamaqua faces Minersville, Panther Valley and North Schuylkill.

More importantly, the victory clinches a berth for Blue Mountain in a deep District 11 Class 4A field in which nine of the 11 teams could qualify. The Eagles clinched the berth based on their league record.
