POTTSVILLE — Eight records were broken and diving made its return after a decade-long absence at the Anthracite Swim League Winter Championships held March 27-28 at Pottsville’s Ned Hampford Natatorium.

Blue Mountain Recreation 13-year-old Sage Eckert broke two records, setting new standards in the boys’ 13-and-over 100-yard freestyle and 50 freestyle.

Eckert’s time of 52.49 in the 100 free re-wrote the longest lasting boys’ record, besting Drew Lightfoot’s time of 53.46 set in 2002. A seventh-grade student at Pottsville’s DHH Lengel Middle School, Eckert’s 50 free time of 23.99 topped Reese Felty’s record of 24.32 set in 2019. Eckert also won the 50 butterfly.

Eckert’s teammate, 14-year-old Connor Dillman, won two events in the boys’ 13-and-over division, winning the 200 freestyle and breaking the record in the 50 backstroke with a time of 28.17. Dillman’s backstroke time broke the previous mark of 28.59 held by both Mark Boran (2013) and Ashton Maroukis (2025).

Schuylkill Haven’s Wesley Netznik shined in the 9-10-year-old group, setting new marks in the 50 freestyle (28.62) and 25 freestyle (13.25). Netznik also won the boys’ 9-10 100 freestyle.

North Schuylkill swimmers broke three records. Brook Ackell set a new mark by winning the girls’ 11-12 500 freestyle in 6:11.33, while Luke O’Neill snapped the standard in the boys’ 9-10 25 butterfly in 14.38. O’Neill then combined with Xander Meluskey, Bryson Harrington-Hutnick and Mason Mendinsky to win the 100 medley relay in a record time of 1:13.25.

The ASL Winter Championships featured 218 athletes (135 girls, 83 boys) from eight teams: Blue Mountain Recreation, Mahanoy Area, Mount Carmel, North Schuylkill, Pottsville Piranhas, Schuylkill Haven, Shamokin Stingrays and Tamaqua Blue Waves.

The event also featured 1-meter diving held Friday, March 27, at North Schuylkill. Girls’ winners included Blue Mountain’s Teagan Brown (8-Under) and Kali Sonon (9-10), Mount Carmel’s Lilliana Dye (11-12) and North Schuylkill’s Lena Lucht (13-Over). Boys’ winners were Bryson Harrington-Hutnick (9-10) and Noah Weremedic (11-12), both of North Schuylkill.
