FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Seniors Braeden Doyle and Gavin Klock came through in the middle innings and Tri-Valley made it stand.

Doyle and Klock each drove in two runs as Tri-Valley defeated Schuylkill Haven 5-1 in the second game of a District 11 Class AA semifinal doubleheader Monday at North Schuylkill’s Robert Wetzel Field.

The Dawgs (19-5) advance to Wednesday’s championship game at 3 p.m. at North Schuylkill to face Marian, a 9-2 winner over Williams Valley in the first game of the semifinal twinbill.

“We have to keep on attacking the baseball like we’ve been,” Tri-Valley coach Brent Smith said. “We’ve got to keep playing defense like we’ve been playing, and just keep playing one pitch at a time — one out at a time. Just have to keep chugging along like we’ve been.”

Tri-Valley broke things open in the second and third innings, starting with an RBI single from Riley Kaslavage before delivering the decisive blow in the third.

Owen Miller and Jason Stewart sparked the rally, and Doyle followed with a two-run single to center. Klock then lined a two-run single down the left-field line to cap a four-run inning and extend the lead to 5-0.

That early cushion was plenty for Peyton Schley, who controlled the game on the mound. The left-hander allowed just three hits over 4.2 scoreless innings, striking out seven and working around two walks.

Doyle came on in relief and closed the door, allowing one run over the final 2.1 innings on the hill.

The Hurricanes (13-10) generated some traffic but couldn’t come up with the timely hit they were in search of.

Alan Evans, Chase Yoder, Michael Terefencko, Brandon Neith and Landon Trostle each recorded hits, while Haven stranded eight runners. The Hurricanes’ lone run came in the seventh when Chase Maley drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Evans turned in a productive outing on the hill for the Hurricanes, pitching six strong innings, striking out five and only allowing one free pass.

Tri-Valley finished with eight hits, with Schley adding two at the plate to go along with his work on the mound. Miller, Stewart, Doyle, Klock, Kaslavage and Lettich also contributed as the Dawgs applied pressure consistently.

Behind timely hitting, strong pitching and steady defense, Tri-Valley turned a tenacious semifinal into a controlled win — and earned another shot at a another district title.

Marian 9, Williams Valley 2

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Rocco Griguoli changed the game with one swing and the Colts never slowed down.

Griguoli, a junior, went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs as Marian defeated Williams Valley in a District 11 Class AA semifinal game at North Schuylkill’s Robert Wetzel Field.

“Rocco is one of the most outstanding stories around,” Colts skipper John Petrilyak said. “He’s probably going to go play some football somewhere next year at a pretty high level. He comes back off a horrific ankle injury during basketball season, and comes back in four months and could’ve very easily said you know what, no baseball for the rest of the year, I’m done. But no, he hung around and came to every practice. We pinch hit him a couple times, but today he looked like he ran very good.

“He could have easily shut it down and gave up on baseball entirely and he didn’t. So kudos to him, he had a big day today and he’s a great kid.”

Griguoli wasted no time setting the tone, launching a screaming three-run homer to straightaway center field in the first inning to give the Colts an early 3-0 cushion.

Marian (17-4) added another run in the second on a Roman Bednarek double, then broke the game open in the fifth with a five-run outburst highlighted by Brayden Grant’s two-run double and Cole Defrancisco’s three-run triple.

Williams Valley showed some life in the fourth, scoring twice behind RBIs from Gavin Trawitz and Chevy Green, but couldn’t sustain the momentum.

Fletcher Thompson and Mason Bowser each added hits, while Cayden Witmer and John Rautzahn also reached base safely as the Vikings were limited to five hits.

Bednarek controlled the game on the mound for Marian, going the distance while allowing two runs and striking out five. The Colts backed him with a patient offensive approach, drawing walks and taking advantage of key opportunities to build separation.

Grant, Bednarek and Defrancisco each contributed to Marian’s six-hit attack, while Danny Lemus worked three walks and added pressure on the bases with a trio of stolen bases. Defensively, the Colts played a clean game behind Bednarek, adding a double play to end the contest.

Williams Valley’s staff battled, but early walks and timely hits proved costly as Marian advanced with a complete performance on both sides of the ball.

ORWIGSBURG — Hunter Rogers kept finding barrels, but North Schuylkill couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Rogers went 3-for-3 as North Schuylkill fell to Northwestern Lehigh in a District 11 Class 4A semifinal game at Blue Mountain’s Allen Greenawalt Field.

The Spartans jumped out early when Chase Slotcavage ripped a double to bring home Rogers in the first inning, but that would be the lone run against Northwestern Lehigh starter Cole Dynda.

Dynda, a right-hander, settled in from there, scattering seven hits over a complete-game effort, striking out seven and walking none.

The Tigers (13-7) answered in the third, taking advantage of free passes and timely hitting. Devin Rex delivered an RBI single, and Lucian Sterling worked a bases-loaded walk to push the Tigers in front. They added two more in the fourth to create separation, capitalizing despite managing just five hits on the day.

Slotcavage added two hits and an RBI for the Spartans, while Kole Rollenhagen and Aaron Brayford also contributed hits as North Schuylkill outhit Northwestern Lehigh seven hits to five.

Stephen Minahan turned in a gritty performance on the mound, allowing just four hits over six innings, but was tagged for four runs — only one earned — as defensive miscues proved costly.

Cannon Fitch, Sterling, Dynda, Rex and Tanner Fronina each collected hits for Northwestern Lehigh, with Dynda, Sterling and Rex driving in runs as the Tigers advanced to the District 11 Class 4A championship against Saucon Valley, a 4-3 winner over Jim Thorpe in eight innings.
