WHITEHALL — Anna Schaeffer is headed back to the PIAA Track and Field Championships.
She’s taking some of her Schuylkill Haven teammates with her.
Schaeffer repeated as champion of the girls’ 3,200-meter run Tuesday on the opening day of the District 11 Track and Field Championships at Whitehall’s Zephyr Complex, winning in 11 minutes, 37 seconds, 27 seconds, well ahead of second-place Madison Dietz of Pen Argyl (12:04.04).
Schaeffer then teamed with Alea Porter, Faith Krammes and Ava Terefencko to place second in the 3,200 relay, punching their ticket to the PIAA Track and Field Championships set for Friday-Saturday, May 23-24, at Shippensburg University.
Teammate Isabella Hughes will join them at Ship, taking second in the Class AA 100 hurdles in 48.22. Haven’s Karlee Feger was fourth in the AA discus, helping the Hurricanes finish in third place in the AA team standings after Day 1.
Schaeffer wasn’t the only Schuylkill League girl to grab gold Tuesday as Minersville’s Maggie Hoffman-Long won the girls’ AA long jump with a top leap of 17 feet, 1 inch.
The top two placewinners in each event earn trips to the state meet, plus those athletes who better specific qualifying standards set by the PIAA.
Other Schuylkill League girls’ AA state qualifiers included Marian’s Kali Grochowski and Minersville’s Avery Miller, who placed second in the high jump and javelin, respectively.
In Class 3A, Pottsville’s Alexa Giuffre was third in the 300 hurdles, but her time of 44.75 was faster than the qualifying standard of 46.25, meaning she’s headed to Shippensburg.

Pine Grove’s Viktorya Luckenbach, meanwhile, dominated the 100 and 200 preliminaries, easily posting the fastest times in both events. Hughes was tops in the 100 hurdles, setting herself up for a second medal Thursday.
Day 2 of the District 11 Track and Field Championships was originally slated for Wednesday, but was moved to Thursday at Whitehall, following the same time schedule.
Other Schuylkill League girls to secure top four medals Tuesday:
** Mahanoy Area’s Felicia Bro and Minersville’s Anna Cook were 3-4 in the AA 3,200, respectively
** Mahanoy Area’s Hailey Mroczka was fourth in the AA 300 hurdles, while the Golden Bears’ Alexis Chilinskas was third in the AA high jump
** Pine Grove’s Hannah Leininger was fourth in the AA javelin
** In Class 3A, Pottsville’s Ashley Gould was fourth in the shot put. Giuffre also posted the second-fastest time in the 100 hurdles preliminaries.
