And then there was one.
Schuylkill Haven emerged as the Schuylkill League’s last unbeaten team as the Hurricanes improved to 6-0 with their impressive 43-29 victory at Williams Valley on Friday night.
The loss by Williams Valley was the Vikings’ first of the season. Marian also suffered its first defeat, falling 38-7 to Minersville.
Haven is one of four unbeaten teams in the Schuylkill-Colonial Cooperative at 6-0, joining Southern Lehigh, Northwestern Lehigh and Notre Dame-Green Pond.
The Hurricanes and Notre Dame-Green Pond will be favored in their remaining four games and should finish the regular season 10-0. Southern Lehigh and Northwestern Lehigh square off in Week 10.
The Haven-Williams Valley showdown was the Game of the Week in the cooperative. Other key scores were Northwestern Lehigh’s 49-18 win over North Schuylkill and Notre Dame-Green Pond outlasted Northern Lehigh 40-21.
Here’s some notes and tidbits as we look back at Week 6 and look ahead to Week 7:
STILL WINLESS: Mahanoy Area grabbed its first win of the season with a come-from-behind, 22-20 victory over Pine Grove.
The win by the Bears leaves three Schuylkill-Colonial squads remain in search of their first victory — Bangor, Wilson Area and Shenandoah Valley.
DIVISION RACES: Southern Lehigh and Northwestern Lehigh have pulled away from the field in the Red Division. The Spartans are 5-0 in league play and the Tigers are 4-0. There are four teams — Blue Mountain, Lehighton, North Schuylkill, Tamaqua — tied at 2-2.
Pen Argyl (4-1 White) survived an upset bid by Salisbury to set up a first-place clash with Notre Dame-Green Pond (4-0 White) this Saturday in White Division play.
In the Blue Division, Schuylkill Haven’s win over Williams Valley and Marian’s loss to Minersville leaves the Hurricanes all alone in first at 5-0. Marian visits Schuylkill Haven this Friday.
