MINERSVILLE — A single stretch flipped everything.
Pottsville used a decisive second quarter run to seize control and hand Minersville its first loss of the season, pulling away for a 62-51 Schuylkill League Division I boys’ basketball victory Thursday at the Fitz.
After Minersville opened the game with energy and built a 15-7 lead in the opening frame, the Crimson Tide completely changed the tone in the second. Pottsville rattled off 20 unanswered points, turning an eight-point deficit into a commanding advantage and sending the Tide into halftime up 30-24.
Senior Davey Kunstek fueled the surge and finished with a game-high 19 points, while Ryder Bowers added 14 and Josh Kimber chipped in seven. Chris Hobbs provided a scoring spark with 10 points, including two 3-pointers.
The Battlin’ Miners tried to respond in the third quarter behind Jordan Bowers and Chase Zimerofsky, who scored 16 and 15 points, respectively. Minersville cut into the margin and outscored Pottsville 17-10 in the frame, but every push was answered.
Shazier Bethea netted 12 points the Battlin’ Miners.
Pottsville closed the door in the fourth quarter, outscoring Minersville 22-10 to secure the win.
The Crimson Tide also received a defensive spark in the lineup this week courtesy of senior guard JuJu Bainbridge, who returned from a lower body injury he sustained early in football season.
The victory kept Pottsville unbeaten in Division I play and underscored its ability to withstand early pressure, while Minersville saw its strong start halted after three straight wins to open the season.
