Hurricanes improve to 5-0 in Division I play

 

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Kylie Siket and Mckenna Runkle each poured in 16 points as Schuylkill Haven rolled to a 59-30 victory over Panther Valley in a Schuylkill League Division I girls’ basketball game Friday night at the CACL Center.

Ava Terefencko added 13 points and Audrey Hutchinson tallied 10 for the Hurricanes (5-1, 5-0 D-I), which stayed tied atop the Division I standings with North Schuylkill. The Spartans also moved to 5-0 with a 49-34 win over Blue Mountain (see story: ).

Siket hit two of her four 3-pointers in the first quarter as Haven built a 15-7 lead. Runkle added six more in the second frame as the Hurricanes expanded their advantage to 30-15 at intermission.

Ace Aponte paced Panther Valley with 14 points, while Morgan Orsulak pulled down 11 rebounds.

Meadow Umbenhauer, Pine Grove girls’ basketball

POTTSVILLE — Meadow Umbenhauer returned to the lineup and scored 17 points as the Cardinals outgunned the Crimson Tide in a Schuylkill League Division I game at Martz Hall.

Umbenhauer, who missed Tuesday’s win over Tamaqua due to injury, hit four of Pine Grove’s seven 3-pointers.

Hollyn Sampson also finished with 17 points for Pine Grove, scoring 13 in the second half. Lainey Fidler drained three 3-pointers and added 10 for the Cards.

Jes Siminitus led Pottsville with 24 points, while Jo Barnhart added 10.

TAMAQUA — Millie Black had a monster game with 23 points and 16 rebounds as the Blue Raiders downed the Miners in a Schuylkill League Division I game.

Black was the only player in the game to reach double figures. Tamaqua opened the game with a 17-5 run and cruised from there.

Jenna Cullen led Minersville with nine points.

MINERSVILLE — Shazier Bethea and Jordan Bowers each scored 14 points as the Miners got out to a quick start and didn’t look back in a non-league win over the Red Tornadoes.

Chase Zimerofsky added 13 points for Minersville, which led 21-8 after one frame. The Miners hit 10 3-pointers, eight of which came in the first half as Minersville led 35-25 at the break.

The Schuylkill League girls’ game between Weatherly and Lourdes was moved to Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m.

The non-league boys’ game between Mahanoy Area and Lincoln Leadership was moved to Dec. 22.
