To all of the wrestlers out there, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays — and Happy 2-Pound Growth Allowance Day!

Starting Dec. 25, high school wrestlers get their “growth allowance.” That means 107-pound wrestlers will make weight at 109 pounds, 114-pounders at 116, and so on. Guys having trouble making the weights they’ve been at won’t have to sacrifice so much. Guys on descent plans and between weights have an easier path to get to their optimum weight class.

Tournament time

Most area teams will be in action over the Christmas break.

Here’s a rundown of some of the major events:

***Hurricane Wrestling Classic (Bethlehem Liberty) — Blue Mountain will test itself Dec. 28-29 in one of the toughest holiday tournaments around (Powerade would be the other). At Liberty, the Eagles will compete against 27 teams, including powerhouses Boyertown, Council Rock South, Emmaus, Nazareth, North Allegheny, Northwestern Lehigh, Quakertown, Saucon Valley and more.

***Jim Thorpe Holiday Tournament (Jim Thorpe) — The Olympians will host their 54th Christmas wrestling tournament Dec. 29-30, welcoming 30 teams. The Schuylkill League will be well-represented, with Mahanoy Area, North Schuylkill, Panther Valley, Pottsville, Tamaqua and Williams Valley in the field. Some heavy hitters in the field include Hughesville, Lehighton, Upper Perkiomen and Wallenpaupack.

***Governor Mifflin Holiday Invitational (Shillington) — Tri-Valley and Pine Grove will compete in the boys’ field, while Pine Grove’s girls will grapple in that bracket. Both events are Dec. 29-30 in Shillington. Other teams in the boys’ field include Brandywine Heights, Dallastown, Governor Mifflin and Halifax. On the girls’ side, the Cardinals will contend with Dallastown, Emmaus and Gettysburg among others.
