Weekend Basketball Roundup: Runkle, Haven girls outlast Mahanoy Area

MAHANOY CITY — Mckenna Runkle capped a big week for the Schuylkill Haven girls’ basketball team with another stellar performance.
Runkle scored a game-high 21 points as the Hurricanes rallied past Mahanoy Area 44-42 in a non-league contest Saturday afternoon.
Runkle compiled 63 points in three games over the past week, helping Schuylkill Haven (12-4) notch victories over Tamaqua, Blue Mountain and Mahanoy Area.
Saturday, she had 13 points in the second half as the Hurricanes prevailed in a potential Schuylkill League and District 11 Class 3A playoff matchup.
Ella Connolly netted 13 points and Felicia Bro and Naomi Kowalick each tallied 10 for Mahanoy Area (12-4), which led 16-6 after one quarter. Schuylkill Haven rallied to tie it at 22-22 at halftime as Ava Terefencko hit a pair of 3-pointers in a 15-6, second-quarter spurt.
Schuylkill Haven forged a 36-32 lead after three periods then held on as Bro scored eight of her points in the fourth. Audrey Hutchinson added 14 points for the Hurricanes.
The game was originally slated for 1 p.m. but was moved back to 4 p.m. due to Saturday’s snowy weather. Only four of the 16 local high school basketball games that were scheduled for Saturday were played. The rest were postponed.

LANSFORD — Morgan Orsulak posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Panthers cruised past the Olympians in the Coach Carroll Classic.
Lucy Kocha drained four 3-pointers and added 17 points for Panther Valley, which dominated the game from start to finish, building a 25-5 halftime lead. The teams combined to shoot 10-for-36 from the foul line.

LANSFORD — Ben Baneravage paced a quartet of double-digit scorers with 17 points as the Panthers topped the Olympians in the Coach Carroll Game.
Baneravage hit four of his five 3-pointers in the first half as Panther Valley built a 36-27 lead at intermission.
Danny Wehr added 12 points, Brody Breiner netted 11 points and Jarell Thomas tallied 10 points as the Panthers beat Jim Thorpe for the second time this season.
The Senior Night win was a balanced attack defensively as Jake Moyer had six rebounds and Baneravage, Breiner and Thomas each had five.
Pierce Gothard paced Jim Thorpe with 17 points.
