HS Boys’ Hoops Roundup: Haven tops Williams Valley; Weatherly clinches District 11 berth

TOWER CITY — Schuylkill Haven jumped out early and controlled the game’s tempo in the second half.

Alan Evans scored a game-high 18 points and the Hurricanes used a strong first quarter to pull away from Williams Valley, earning a 54-46 victory in a Schuylkill League Division II boys’ basketball game Saturday afternoon at Williams Valley Jr./Sr High School.

Haven jumped out early, opening a 21-17 lead after one quarter. Evans knocked down four 3-pointers, while Max Heim and Justin Watcher added 10 points apiece as Haven controlled the tempo for most of the night.

Williams Valley stayed within striking distance early, led by Gabe Rodriguez’s 14 points. Bryce Zilinski chipped in 12 points and Evan Achenbach added 10 for the Vikings, who led 30-27 at the half.

The Hurricanes’ defense tightened after the break.

Haven limited the Vikings to just 16 points over the final two quarters to seal the league win.

FREELAND — Weatherly stayed hot offensively and rolled past MMI Prep in non-league action.

The Wreckers placed five players in double figures, led by Nico Saldukas and Corbin Wagner with 16 points each. Ian McKeegan added 14, while Dom Kokinda chipped in 11 as Weatherly steadily built separation in every quarter.

The win also cliched a District 11 Class A tournament spot for the Wreckers.

Niko Saldukas, Weatherly boys’ basketball

Nativity 64, Susquehanna Community 54 

SUSQUEHANNA — Trey Keating delivered another scoring explosion, pouring in a game-high 42 points as Nativity knocked off Susquehanna Community in a non-league contest.

Keating knocked down six 3-pointers and scored at all three levels, helping the Hilltoppers pull away after halftime. Layne Pasker chipped in 10 points as Nativity outscored Susquehanna 39-31 over the final two quarters to secure the win.

MAHANOY CITY — Ryan Zilker led Mahanoy Area with a game-high 26 points in a non-league victory over Pen Argyl.

Connor Bowman added 21, including five 3-pointers as the Golden Bears held Pen Argyl to just one point in the second quarter, building a cushion it never relinquished. Cam Smith collected 10 points for Mahanoy Area.

COAL TWP. — Lourdes put together one of its most complete performances of the season, defeating Millville in non-league play.

Gaven Renn scored 14 points, while Brighton Scicchitano added a team-high 16 and Trebor Moore chipped in 12 as the Red Raiders used a dominant second quarter to blow the game open.

WILLIAMSPORT — Pottsville struggled to find an offensive rhythm and dropped a non-league road game to Williamsport.

Ryder Bowers paced the Crimson Tide with 14 points, while Christian Alvarez added nine. The Millionaires gradually pulled away behind a balanced scoring effort and strong third-quarter run.

LEHIGHTON — Tamaqua endured a difficult defeeat on the road, falling to Lehighton in non-league action.

Jakin Tamagini scored five points to lead the Blue Raiders, who were held to single digits in three of the four quarters as the Indians controlled the game from start to finish.
