MAHANOY CITY — Pine Grove’s underclassmen continue to grow.
Starting just one senior, the Cardinals got contributions up and down the lineup to overwhelm Mahanoy Area 58-14 on Wednesday night in a Schuylkill League Division II boys’ wrestling dual meet at Joe Alansky Gymnasium.
Pine Grove (13-5, 3-1 D-II) enjoyed strong performances from its usual stars, but junior Taylor Enge (127), sophomore Kendrick Wolfgram (152) and freshmen Josh Witherow (107) and Liam Levan (114) joined the victory party as the Cards took 10-of-13 weights. Pine Grove started one senior, eight juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen.
“I think we started a little slow and then kind of picked it up as the matches went on,” Pine Grove coach Paul Frantz said. “Those two days off, everybody was a little bit sleepy, but I liked how we finished the matches off.”
Witherow and Levan set the tone for the Cardinals in the first two bouts. Witherow led off by pinning Nia Gregory in 4:43, and Levan scored four takedowns in a 17-1 technical fall over Nolan Timko for a quick 11-0 lead.
Standout freshman Arturo Reyes (121) got Mahanoy Area on the board with an 18-1 technical fall over Chase Nagle. Three takedowns, including a powerful and crisp shrug by, plus two four-point near falls got the job done. Yet the Golden Bears (6-4, 2-2) won just two other bouts. At 160, Rory Dixon piled up five takedowns in a 19-3 technical fall over Austin Frantz, and at 189, Stanley Boris outlasted Logan Troup by major decision, 16-7.
Drew Hikes (133), Isaiah Miller (172), Zach Kurtz (215), Scout Frantz (285), Enge and Wolfgram also posted pins for Pine Grove. James Hoy (139) scored three takedowns and two sets of back points in a 17-0 technical fall over Sonny Seritti.
Now both teams will turn their attention to the District 11 Team Wrestling Championships — the District Duals — to be held Saturday at Bethlehem Freedom High School. Pine Grove entered the day sixth and Mahanoy Area seventh in the Class AA rankings. North Schuylkill (first) and Tri-Valley (third) also are solidly in the field.
The top eight teams in each class will qualify for the District Duals. A District 11 committee will gather Friday to seed the teams and set the pairings.
“Last year we made it, and it was the first time we made it in for a while,” Paul Frantz said. “This year, I’m hoping we can pick up a ‘W’ there.”
