HS Swimming: Pottsville sweeps tri-meet with Marian, Haven

Tide’s Klinger, Mahanoy Area’s Brown set school records
POTTSVILLE — The Pottsville girls’ swimming team staged another late comeback Wednesday en route to a pair of Schuylkill League victories at the Ned Hampford Natatorium.
The Crimson Tide won the final three events to upend Schuylkill Haven 78-74 while also recording an 87-35 victory over Marian. Haven and Marian weren’t scored against each other.
In its dual with Schuylkill Haven, Pottsville trailed 60-50 after the 200-yard freestyle relay. Izzy Walchak and Carlee Smulligan followed by placing 1-2 in the 100 backstroke and Kahmaya Van Orden won the 100 breaststroke. The Tide won the meet by placing 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay, outscoring the Hurricanes 12-2 in the event.
It’s the fourth win of the season for Pottsville (8-6-1, 6-5-1 SL) by seven points or less. The Tide edged Mahanoy Area 58-55 and 67-60, nipped Saucon Valley 68-64, then rallied past Haven. Pottsville also surged late to tie North Schuylkill 80-80.
Cali Stauffer (200 IM, 100 free) and Hope Stauffer (50 free, 100 fly) each won two events for Schuylkill Haven (6-8, 4-7). Lydia Strucko touched first in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke for Marian (0-11, 0-10).

MAHANOY CITY — The Eagles tuned up for Thursday’s Schuylkill League first-place showdown with Tamaqua by scoring an easy win over the Golden Bears.
Alayna Hensel (200 IM, 500 free) won twice for Blue Mountain (13-1, 11-0), while Isabella Lafko (200 free), Caitlyn Seidel (100 fly) and Anna Kaplafka (100 back) added individual wins.
Lily Brown won twice for Mahanoy Area, breaking the school record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.76. She also won the 100 free, while Kendall Kardisco took first in the 100 breaststroke for the Bears (2-10, 2-10).

Klinger breaks record again as Tide sweep Haven, Marian
POTTSVILLE — Adam Klinger celebrated Senior Night by breaking his own records in the 6-dive event as the Tide swept a Schuylkill League tri-meet with Schuylkill Haven and Marian.
Klinger scored 333.60 points as Pottsville downed Schuylkill Haven 86-60 and Marian 78-43. The Hurricanes and Colts weren’t scored against each other.
Ashton Maroukis (100 free) and Logan Strauss (500 free) added victories for Pottsvile (12-3, 10-2 SL), which swept the relays.
Michael Strucko (200 free, 100 back) and Andrew Metters (50 free, 100 breast) each won two events for Marian (3-8, 3-7). Ethan Miller won the 200 IM for Schuylkill Haven (6-8, 5-6).
