MAHANOY CITY — The Schuylkill League Boys’ Track and Field Championships had a little bit of everything Wednesday at Mahanoy Area’s Alumni Stadium.
On the track, things went pretty much as expected:
*** The sprinter battle between Blue Mountain’s Chase Guers, North Schuylkill’s Luke Miller and Minersville’s Paiten LaPoint lived up to its billing, with new Schuylkill League meet and all-time records set in both the 100 and 200 meters.
*** Nativity’s Noah Dolbin was his usual dominant self, breaking the league meet marks in both the 110 and 300 hurdles.
*** The Blue Mountain 400 relay continued to post new standards, while Nativity continued its dominance in the 1600 relay.
*** Top seeds Michael Stank (400) and Nolan Daynorowicz (800) of Nativity and Minersville’s Kolin Long (1600) captured gold, although Stank had to fight off Blue Mountain’s Cole Swick and Long nipped Mahanoy Area’s William Mayberry by less than a second.
In the field, however, there were some surprises:
*** Marian’s Jacob Tom pulled off the upset of the meet, outleaping Dolbin and Minersville’s Dante Carr to win the long jump in 22 feet.
*** Schuylkill Haven’s Luke Smith also knocked off a top seed, winning the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 2 inches and winning a tiebreaker with Carr.
Blue Mountain repeated as team champions, with Guers (triple jump), Dalton Minnick (pole vault) and William Shaner (javelin) adding field-event golds.
The throws went as expected, with Schuylkill Haven’s Ethan Kline (shot put) and Pottsville’s Ryan Galen (discus) extending their regular-season dominance into the postseason and grabbing league gold.

All in all, there were five Schuylkill League meet records broken, all on the track.
Both Guers and Miller were faster than the meet standard in both the 100 and 200. Guers took top honors in the 100 in 10.48, shattering the previous record of 10.77 set by Marian’s Michael Fellin in 2020. Miller was second in 10.60, with LaPoint third in 10.80.
In the 200, Miller (21.43) edged Guers (21.46) in a photo finish, eclipsing the previous meet record of 21.92 set last year by North Schuylkill’s Joey Flail.
Both Guers’ time in the 100 and Miller’s time in the 200 are Schuylkill League all-time records.
“I felt good coming into the day,” said Guers, who also won the triple jump with a top jump of 43-4.25. “I had a chip on my shoulder after losing to LaPoint and Miller the week prior. Obviously, it was a big meet, but I wanted to treat it as any other meet and run the race the way I know I can.
“When I found out I broke the record it felt great! It’s something I felt I could do but it was a matter of time for it to happen.”
Guers earned a third gold when he combined with Kole Luckenbill, older brother Gaige Guers and Swick to win the 400 relay in a meet-record 41.43. The foursome already owns the Schuylkill League all-time record at 41.27.

Dolbin, meanwhile, won the 110 hurdles in 14.33 and the 300 hurdles in 38.67, both meet records. Tamaqua’s Eric Hertzog set the prior mark in the 110 hurdles (14.54) in 2013, while Blue Mountain’s Chris Jamison’s time of 39.15 in 2009 was the old 300 mark.
Dolbin garnered a third gold when he teamed with Stank, Liam Messina and Daynorowicz to win the 1600 relay in 3:25.77, 13 seconds ahead of second-place Blue Mountain.
Next up for the Schuylkill League track and field athletes is the District 11 Track and Field Championships set for May 13-14 at Whitehall High School.
