Schuylkill League Girls’ Track Championships: Cards’ Luckenbach, Tide’s Giuffre lead record-breaking bonanza

MAHANOY CITY — Viktorya Luckenbach’s list of track and field accomplishments is a lengthy one full of medals at the league, district and state levels.
She added the title of “Schuylkill League’s fastest girls’ sprinter ever” to it Wednesday.
The Pine Grove senior broke Schuylkill League meet and all-time records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes during Day 2 of the Schuylkill League Track and Field Championships at Mahanoy Area’s Alumni Stadium.
Her performance headlined a day that saw six girls’ meet records fall, with Pottsville’s Alexa Giuffre winning three individual gold medals and setting new marks in the 100 hurdles and long jump.
Nativity’s Sara Spolski (400) rewrote her own meet record in the 400 meters, while Blue Mountain’s Makayla Keck broke the meet mark in the javelin.
Tamaqua’s Samantha Plasha was also a double winner, taking first in the high jump and pole vault, while Schuylkill Haven’s Anna Schaeffer added a second individual gold in the 1600 and then anchored the Hurricanes’ first-place 1600 relay team.
Keck’s Eagles won the team title with 156 points, with Blue Mountain teammate Gianna Chipriano claiming first in the 800 meters.
The day, however, was a golden senior moment for Luckenbach.
A PIAA champion as a sophomore, Luckenbach has been unbeatable all season. She entered the two-day competition already having posted all-time record times of 11.60 seconds in the 100 meters April 22 at Pottsville and 23.92 in the 200 meters April 25 at the Blue Mountain Invitational.
In the 100, Luckenbach broke Kaila O’Connor of Jim Thorpe’s league meet record of 11.97 in Tuesday’s preliminaries with a time of 11.84 seconds, then went even faster in Wednesday’s finals by winning gold in 11.59.
In the 200, she broke O’Connor’s league record of 24.64 by winning gold in 24.12. Both of O’Connor’s league records were set in 2023.
For good measure, Luckenbach earned a third gold in the 400 relay, teaming with Bella Kassab, Aubrey Aungst and Molly Drumheller to win in 50.24.

Schuylkill League records, which were provided to T102SportsNow.com by Minersville coach Jason Burgess prior to the season, date back to 2003 when the league started using metric FAT timing.
Like Luckenbach, Giuffre has dominated the competition all season, with Wednesday being no different.
A junior, Giuffre broke the 100-hurdle league record of 15.28 set by Pine Grove’s Maddie Frew in 2016 by winning in 15.18. She nearly broke the mark in the 300 hurdles as well, as her winning time of 45.63 was just shy of the 45.61 set by North Schuylkill’s Meg O’Keefe in 2010.
Giuffre’s best performance came in the triple jump, where her winning leap of 18 feet bested the previous mark of 17-8.5 set by Pottsville’s Christian Dolbin in 1996.

Some other highlights from an action-packed day that saw the Schuylkill League essentially run an entire league meet in one day after just four events were held Tuesday due to severe weather:
*** Keck’s winning throw of 157 feet, 5 inches broke the previous league record of 156-9 set by Tamaqua’s Allison Updike in 2010.
*** Spolski won the 400 in 59.50, besting her own league record of 59.61 set last year. She remains the only Schuylkill League girls’ runner to break the 1-minute mark in the event the entire season.

*** Schaeffer won the 1600 in 5:19.77, crossing the finish line 22 seconds ahead of second-place Vanessa Frasnelli of Blue Mountain. It was her second individual gold of the league championships after winning the 3200 run Tuesday.
*** Schaeffer helped Schuylkill Haven pull off one of the upsets of the day, teaming with Audrey Hutchinson, Ava Terefencko and Isabella Hughes to win the 1600 relay in 4:11.85, beating top-seeded Pottsville by nearly 4 seconds.
*** Plasha was the only girl to clear 5 feet en route to winning the high jump, then took the pole vault in 10-1, beating Minersville’s Alyssa Cook (10-1) on a tiebreaker.
*** Other field-event winners included Minersville’s Maggie Hoffman-Long (35-1) in the triple jump, Pottsville’s Ashley Gould (32-8) in the shot put and T102 Sports Now intern Karlee Feger of Schuylkill Haven in the discus with a season-best throw of 105-8 (Way to go Karlee!!).
*** Blue Mountain only had three champions — Keck, Chipriano and the 3200 relay team — but the Eagles scored seven silvers and 15 top-four medals en route to the team title. Frasnelli earned four medals while Izabel Zajac was second in the high jump, second in the triple jump, fourth in the long jump and ran on the Eagles’ second-place 400 relay team.
