PINE GROVE — Braedan Doyle knew just what the Dawgs needed.

Doyle, a junior right-hander, tossed a complete-game shutout and Parker Hatter delivered the biggest blow as Tri-Valley blanked Minersville 4-0 in a Schuylkill League quarterfinal baseball game Monday at Walter Stump Stadium.

“I was just trying to stay in the zone,” Doyle said. “I wanted to keep my pitch count low and not waste pitches. I wasn’t happy with some of the pitches I threw — I felt like they were too much of a waste. Overall, I felt good, arm felt loose. And it’s warm out so that is always nice.”

Doyle was scintillating from the start, holding the Battlin’ Miners to just two hits over seven scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out four, walked two, and faced just 25 batters in an efficient 91-pitch outing to lead the Division I runner-up Dawgs into the semifinals.

Tri-Valley broke a scoreless tie in the third inning by plating all four of its runs. Gavin Klock was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the first run. Then Hatter laced a three-run double into the gap to cap the frame and give the Dawgs all the offense they’d need.

Hatter finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs from the eight hole in the lineup. Jason Stewart and Doyle both doubled, while Jack Wehry added a triple. Owen Miller added a run scored and stole a base.

Minersville’s starter, Logan Hutsko, suffered the loss despite a solid effort. Hutsko, a senior southpaw, allowed five hits and four earned runs over six innings, striking out five and walking three. He also hit three batters.

Easton Schultz and Jason Correll accounted for the only hits for theMiners, with Correll recording a double. The Miners played error-free defense behind Hutsko, but they couldn’t string together enough offense to threaten Doyle’s command.

“There is a lot from everybody,” Doyle said about the Dawgs’ effort. “Going to optional practices when you don’t have to and spending your summers playing travel baseball when you don’t have to, when you could be enjoying your summer.”

Tri-Valley squares off with the Division II champion, Schuylkill Haven, in the second game of Tuesday’s (weather pending) semifinal doubleheader at Stump Stadium. Tamaqua faces Blue Mountain in the first game at 4:30 p.m. and the Dawgs and Hurricanes will follow (approximate starting time between 7-7:45 p.m.).
