MAHANOY CITY — Williams Valley’s running game continued to dominate Friday night against Mahanoy Area.
Sophomore running back Fletcher Thompson rushed for 163 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Vikings coasted past the Golden Bears 42-0 in a Schuylkill-Colonial Blue Division game at Coach Faz Field at Alumni Stadium.
The Vikes finished with 341 yards rushing, racking up 17 first downs. In two games, Williams Valley is 2-0 and has outscored its opponents 96-0.
Thompson scored the game’s first points 50 seconds into the game on a 50-yard run.
After a three-and-out by the Golden Bears (0-2, 0-1 Blue), the Vikings struck again on a 17-yard run by Trevon Bair to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.
To end the first quarter, Thompson ran in a 8-yard touchdown to put the Vikings up 20-0 after 12 minutes.
The Vikings did not slow down on the ground. In the second quarter, quarterback Brady Shomper scored on a 5-yard run. A successful two-point conversion put the Vikings up 28-0, which they carried into the half.
After a three-and-out by the Golden Bears to start the third quarter, Thompson took a short pass by Shomper 49 yards for another Vikings touchdown to make it 35-0.
Thompson took a big hit to the head by a Golden Bears defender that was heard throughout the whole stadium but was not fazed by it and continued for the touchdown.
“I got a little angry after the hit and I was thinking I can not let that happen to me so I had to go all the way,” Thompson said.
Added Williams Valley head coach Stephen Sedesse: “That hit he took and being able to come back from that to make the play was awesome.”
Evan Achenbach capped Williams Valley’s dominant performance with a 2-yard TD reception from Shomper that made it 42-0.
Thompson credited the hard work it took to get to where he is to his dad and a few teammates he grew up with.
“My dad was a running back too, and every night growing up we would go outside out back and practice everything,” Thompson said.
