Pottsville to induct 9 into All Sports Hall of Fame

The Pottsville All Sports Hall of Fame will induct nine new members as part of its 2025 induction banquet Sunday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m. at the Pottsville Zone, Peacock Street, Pottsville.

This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include: 

Bob Price

Class of 1980

Price was a four-year letterwinner as both a swimmer and a diver. He was a top scorer in his junior and senior years and the team captain both seasons. He had combined diversity as both a swimmer and a diver.

Price then served as the diving coach for more than 25 years. He coached numerous divers to district and state championships. He is a born leader and coach and was able to pass his knowledge to many Tide swimmers and divers during his tenure.

 

Gil Hoak

Class of 1989

Hoak was a four-year member of the Tide football team where he was an outside linebacker for two seasons. He moved to defensive end his senior season and was also the backup quarterback.

Hoak was also a three-year member of the Tide baseball team. He led the team in homers and was second in total bases and slugging percentage in his senior year. He also pitched and won two games as a No. 3 starter, striking out 47 batters in 41 innings pitched.

Angela Boris

Class of 1991

Boris was an outstanding basketball and softball player. In basketball, she was a three-year starter at point guard and held the school record for assists at the time.  She was a Pottsville Republican All-Area team member her senior season, helping the Lady Tide reach the PIAA Eastern final.

Boris was a four-year starter and letterwinner in softball as an outfielder. She batted over .300 for her career. She led the team in runs and stolen bases in her final three seasons. She was a team captain for both basketball and softball her senior year.

Susan Mulqueen Ognibene

Class of 1994

Sue was a four-year member of the cross country and basketball teams. In basketball, she was a deft passer as a point guard, breaking Angie Boris’ record for career assists during her playing career.

Mulqueen Ognibene earned a full scholarship to play basketball at NCAA Division I Hofstra University.

Tom McMurtrie

Class of 1997

McMurtrie was a two-year member of the Tide basketball team but made his mark on the baseball diamond. He was an outstanding catcher on state-caliber teams, catching the likes of Tide Hall of Famers Jeff Yoder, Sean Holden and Pat Boran.

McMurtrie hit .325 for his career. As a senior he hit .389 with five homers and was second on the team in runs scored and RBIs, earning Pottsville Republican All-Area honors.

After graduation, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Bobby Thompson

Class of 2000

Thompson was a part of the Tide football program for six years, starting in seventh grade. He played wide receiver, defensive back and punt returner, earning first-team All-County and WYLN first-team honors as a senior while receiving a Big 33 nomination.

Thompson was also a two-year member of the basketball team.

Travis Blankenhorn

Class of 2015

One of the best athletes to ever roam the halls at Pottsville Area High School.

Blankenhorn was a three-year letterwinner in football, where he played wide receiver and defensive back. In his junior season, he was named a first-team defensive back on the Republican’s All-Area Team, was a Schuylkill County Football Coaches’ Association Dream Team pick at both defensive back and wide receiver, was named to the Berks County Football Coaches Association Section 1 first team at wide receiver and defensive back, and was a third-team selection to the Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State team as a defensive back.

In basketball, Blankenhorn was a four-year varsity letterwinner and ranks second all-time in scoring with 1,588 points.

In his freshman year, Blankenhorn was named to the Republican-Herald All-Area Boys’ Basketball first team and Co-Rookie of the Year. In his sophomore year, he was named to the Republican Hearld All-Area first team. As a junior, Blankenhorn was the Republican-Herald Co-MVP and was the Pottsville Boys’ Basketball League Co-MVP.  In his senior season, he was Lions Club MVP, Pottsville Boys’ Basketball League MVP, Senior Charity Bowl Mickey Holland Award winner, Republican-Herald All-Area Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year and Class 3A third-team All-State.

Baseball was his best sport. He was a full-time starter all four years. He hit over .300 in his freshman and junior seasons and batted over .400 his sophomore and senior (.441) seasons. Blankenhorn finished with a .401 career average with 22 doubles, eight triples and nine homers, even though he was constantly pitched around. He finished with numerous top-five career records.

Blankenhorn was selected in the third round, 80th overall, in the 2015 MLB Amateur Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins and went on to play in the majors for the Twins, New York Mets and Washington Nationals. He was also a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners and Anaheim Angels organizations.

Barb McGinley

Honorary, Class of 1974

McGinley was a long-time coach in both cross country and track and field. The achievements by her coaching and her runners are numerous.

As a cross country head coach, her boys’ teams had a pair of four-year stretches of being undefeated. One was 40-0 and the other 45-0, winning Schuylkill League Division I championships throughout both stretches. Her teams captured three Schuylkill League team titles in that time and had two individual champions.

In 2000, McGinley was the first coach to win both boys’ and girls’ Schuylkill League Division I championships. In girls’ cross country, she had a two-year undefeated stretch as well. They had team and individual titles in that time. She had another two-year period with a 22-0 record with division and Schuylkill League titles. In 2001, she was the only coach to have four individual athletes compete at the state level. She had 12 years where the Tide had a state meet qualifier.

In track, she was either an assistant or head coach (12 years) for 21 years. She was mostly a distance running coach. In girls, her teams either won or tied for three division championships. She has had eight girls who were named outstanding athletes that covered all sports in her time.

Scott Mattea

Honorary, Class of 1988

Mattea’s athletic career started as a member of the Tide baseball team. Although he didn’t play much, he learned from Coach Jim Steidle and was a coach before he graduated.

After college, Mattea coached girls’ basketball from eighth-grade level to varsity assistant for 15 years. He was also a JV and varsity assistant baseball coach for 21 seasons.

Starting in 1994, Mattea became the Director of Athletics and Activities at Pottsville Area High School, a job he held for 20 years. He has been the secretary/treasurer for the Schuylkill League from 2005 through present. He has won several awards as an athletic director during his time at PAHS.
