SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Pottsville coach Bob Stock was looking for an offensive spark.

He found one in Jes Siminitus.

Siminitus scored a pair of first-half goals to lift the Crimson Tide to a 4-0 victory over Tri-Valley in a Schuylkill League girls’ soccer quarterfinal Saturday morning at Rotary Field.

The victory advances the Division I runners-up to Monday’s semifinals, where Pottsville (10-7-1) will face Division II champion Schuylkill Haven (13-4-1) at 5 p.m. at Rotary Field.

Pine Grove won Game 2 of Saturday’s soccer quarterfinal quadrupleheader, beating Minersville 2-1 in double overtime on Hannah Aungst’s header. The Cardinals (9-7-3) will take on Division I champion Blue Mountain (15-3) in Monday’s second semifinal at 7 p.m. at Rotary Field.

Stock moved Siminitus, his best defender, up to striker midway through the first half and the senior leader responded with a pair of goals.

“We moved her up, about 20 minutes in,” Pottsville coach Bob Stock said of Siminitus. “She definitely gave us a spark up there. A little more speed.”

Siminitus’ first goal came at 27:30 on a long shot from the left wing after taking a pass from Riley Davis. She scored again with 1:15 left in the first half after Emma Quirin-Morris made a long advance up the right side and crossed a pass that tipped off the goalkeeper right to Siminitus, who tapped it into a wide-open net.

“It felt really great,” Siminitus said. “The energy was up. It’s really about the goals for my team, not for myself.

“I had the wide-open shot there, I took it, I’m happy it went in. The second one, Emma Morris had a great assist. She took the ball all the way down the field, crossed it in and I just happened to be there to put it in.”

Megan Goodman and Bella Wright tallied goals in the second half for Pottsville, which outshot Tri-Valley 11-1. Stock moved Siminitus back to defense for the second half as the Tide contained Tri-Valley forward Maggie Hoffman-Long, who entered the final week of the regular season as the Schuylkill League’s goal scorer.

Hoffman-Long, who had both goals in the Dawgs’ 2-1 win over Williams Valley in the Division II tiebreaker game Thursday, was held to one shot on goal.

“That was our goal from the get-go. Watch 10, she’s their scorer,” Stock said. “When she touches the ball, we double her. That’s what they did. That’s why I moved Jes back in the second half. We didn’t need any more goals. We needed to shut them down.

“Jes is very good at it. She’s played defense for me for four years. Moving her up gives us an additional benefit.”

Siminitus, who also plays basketball and runs track for the Tide, was happy to be able to contribute on both ends of the field.

“My role this year really changed,” Siminitus said. “I play defense sometimes, I play offense sometimes. I really kind of go wherever my coach tells me to go on the field. I just try to help my team out, getting the ball up to the offense or converting goals myself.”

Pine Grove 2, Minersville 1, 2OT

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Hannah Aungst headed a corner kick off the far post and into the net for the game-winning goal with 8:05 left in the second overtime to lift the Cardinals past the Miners in Game 2 of the Schuylkill League quarterfinals at Rotary Field.

Lily Fisher lofted the corner kick from the right side of the formation to the opposite post. Aungst, stationed in front of the net, was able to head it off the post and into the net past goalie Isabella Rizzardi.

“It was great,” Aungst said after the win. “We’ve been into overtime many times in the regular season, played them into overtime. The corner was a great-placed corner. She had one earlier in the game that we finished on.

“It was a great team win.”

Pine Grove scored both of its goals off corners by Fisher. The Cardinals opened the scoring 66:51 into the contest on a goal by Kendra Umbenhauer.

Minersville (14-3-2) answered just under two minutes later when Kloee Horoschak scored on a blast through the middle of the field into the right side of the net.

The game then remained scoreless through the first 15-minute overtime and midway through the second one until Aungst ended it.

Aungst said her goal came after Pine Grove coach Andrew Haas changed the Cardinals’ alignment for the overtime periods. Pine Grove finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.

“We went a little more with layers,” Haas said. “We went to a 4-4-2, we were playing a 4-3-3. We controlled the midfield in the two overtimes … Gianna Pompei, Hannah controlled the midfield for us. It got us some good looks, got us that corner. That’s where we’re dangerous, on those corners.”

Haas said he hopes Saturday’s win sparks the Cardinals on a long playoff run. Pine Grove lost both of its regular-season matchups with Blue Mountain, falling 1-0 on Aug. 28 and 3-0 on Sept. 22.

“I’m happy for these girls. I’m proud of them,” Haas said. “We had a very volatile season. I think they’re finally starting to play the way they should have played throughout the entire season. They’re starting to find some success, get a little bit of confidence with that.

“I always talk to (my players) that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” Pine Grove coach Andrew Haas said. “Right now we’re playing our best ball of the season. … We’re peaking at the right time. We just have to keep executing.”
