SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — The Schuylkill Haven girls’ basketball team accomplished something for the first time in program history last season: Win a Schuylkill League title.

A year later, the Hurricanes are hungry for another.

Schuylkill Haven returns four key pieces from last year’s squad that finished 23-7 and outlasted North Schuylkill 38-31 in the Schuylkill League final at Martz Hall.

Do-it-all junior forward Mckenna Runkle earned Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class 3A third-team All-State honors after averaging 11.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 4.9 steals per game. Senior defensive wizard Audrey Hutchinson, junior 3-point specialist Kylie Siket and scrappy junior guard Ava Terefencko are also back for the Hurricanes, who reached the PIAA playoffs for the first time since 1986 and won their first PIAA playoff game since 1985, a span of 40 years.

The Hurricanes’ returning quartet talks about the upcoming season during this interview at the second Schuylkill League Basketball Media Day held Nov. 16 at Schuylkill Haven’s Sports Performance Center:

Repeating as league champion won’t be easy for Schuylkill Haven.

First, the Hurricanes will have to replace graduated starters Anna Schaeffer and Alea Porter, each of whom played key roles during the postseason. Second, they’ll need to build depth after three key reserves from last year’s squad didn’t come out for the team this season.

Most importantly, they’ll have to navigate a tough Division I schedule full of teams eager to knock them off.

At the top of that list is defending Division I champion North Schuylkill, which rolled through its Schuylkill League Division I slate to a 14-0 record a year ago.

Schuylkill League Coaches’ Association Division I Player of the Year Mya Conti is back after averaging 15.6 points, 3.8 assists and 4.3 steals per game while making 34 3-pointers. Also returning are junior guard/forward Gianna Capone and senior forward Jadelin Stitzer, while key bench pieces Monica Selgrade and Addisyn Balicki will step into starting roles.

With a guard-oriented lineup, expect the Spartans to run the floor and have a fast-paced offense. Their area of concern will be in the paint as they must find someone to fill the shoes of graduated center Hannah Kane, who dominated on both ends of the floor.

“We have the potential to compete for the division, league and district championships,” North Schuylkill coach Rich Wetzel wrote in his preseason outlook. The Spartans have played in the league final the past six years.

“This year we have the smallest group I’ve had since I’ve been coaching at North Schuylkill, but we are again athletic and our core group has put the time in over the last 10 months to improve their ability to become better basketball players.”

Tamaqua also returns three starters from last year’s club that was 18-7 and finished as the Division I wild card. The Blue Raiders upended Division II co-champion Williams Valley in the league quarterfinals, then fell in the final seconds to North Schuylkill in the league semifinals.

Junior forward Lauren Ligenza averaged 13.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last season. Also returning are senior forward Leah Black, senior guard/forward Kendle Miller and sophomore forward Millie Black.

The Blue Raiders’ area of concern is finding someone to run the offense as point guard Kolbe Robb graduated.

“We expect to compete in every game,” Tamaqua coach Erika Davis wrote in her preseason outlook. “We had a lot of great competitive battles throughout our postseason last year and are hoping to build off that.”

While Schuylkill Haven, North Schuylkill and Tamaqua expect to be at the top of the division standings when the smoke clears, they are not the only talented teams in Division I.

Pine Grove went 14-9 overall and 8-6 in league play a year ago in Allison Rizzo’s first year at the helm. Senior guard Callee Leffler, junior guard Meadow Umbenhauer and sophomore center Hollyn Sampson return for the Cards, who only have one senior on their roster.

Blue Mountain fell to 7-7 in Division I play a year ago after winning the 2024 Schuylkill League championship. Mila Fleagle, Hailey Place and Callie Peel return for Rose Carper’s squad.

Pottsville has a new coach in Damian Fritz, who left Marian after guiding the Fillies to 91 wins and two District 11 crowns over the past four seasons. Jes Siminitus, Jo Barnhart, Myla Fegley and Megan Goodman return for the Tide, who will look to improve on last year’s 8-15 mark.

Panther Valley and Minersville both feature young rosters that contain a player who could take over the game on any particular night.

Senior Morgan Orsulak paces the Panthers, who were 8-14 a year ago. Junior guard Jenna Cullen is back for a Minersville squad that also has only one senior on its roster.

2025-26 Schuylkill League Girls’ Basketball Preview Capsules

DIVISION I

Blue Mountain

Head coach: Rose Carper (4th season)

Last season: 8-15, 7-7 Division I. District 11 Class 4A qualifier

Key losses: Ruby Henninger, Makayla Keck, Cameryn Campbell

Key returners: Mila Fleagle (jr., G/F), Hailey Place (sr., G), Callie Peel (jr., PG)

Key newcomers: Delaney Walborn (sr., G), Kelly Canfield (sr., F), Kylie Faust (jr., G), Karley Koch (soph., F/C)

Outlook: Eagles bring back three key pieces of last year’s squad while adding Walborn, who had to sit out a year after transferring from Nativity. Key for Blue Mountain is to find some scorers as Eagles struggled to score points in key games last season. Should be competitive in the Division I race and challenge for a playoff berth.

Minersville

Head coach: Emily Mealey (2nd season)

Last season: 2-20, 0-14 Division I

Key losses: Ayla Castle

Key returners: Bella Cruz (sr., G/F), Jenna Cullen (jr., G), Alayna Boom (jr., G), Catherine Ilsley (jr., F), Rilynn Brennan (soph., G), Sara McGrath (soph., G/F)

Key newcomers: Eva Ladick (fr., F), Lara Gretsky (fr., G), Cadence Starner (fr., G), Alexa Eisenhart (fr., F), Kylie Mistishen (fr., G), Millie Bierman (fr., F), Natalie Mapp (fr., G)

Outlook: Miners’ first season in Division I was a tough one, especially considering the graduation losses from the season before. This season brings hope as all but one player returns. Miners will still be young with only one senior on roster but should benefit from a year of varsity experience. Cullen and Boom provide scoring, while Ilsley controls the inside. Qualifying for districts should be the Miners’ goal.

North Schuylkill

Head coach:  Rich Wetzel (10th season)

Last season: 19-8, 14-0 Division I. Schuylkill League Division I champion, Schuylkill League runner-up, District 11 Class 4A semifinals

Key losses: Hannah Kane, Maria Monohan

Key returners: Mya Conti (sr., G), Gianna Capone (jr., G/F), Jadelin Stitzer (sr., F), Monica Selgrade (soph., G), Addisyn Balicki (soph., G/F), Ella Digris (soph., G), Kate Urbanavage (sr., G/F), Jolin Stitzer (jr., C), Abby Klingerman (jr., G), Allison Baez (jr., G)

Key newcomers: Kyla Rose (fr., G), Payton Gawrylik (fr., G), Kauryl Abreu (jr., G), Mariana Garcia (jr., F)

Outlook: Spartans return a talented nucleus capable of repeating as Division I champion. Wetzel’s squad features explosive scorers in Conti, Capone and Selgrade, plus some grinders in Jadelin Stitzer and Balicki. Expect Spartans to push the pace offensively. Major question mark is Spartans’ height, as North Schuylkill needs to develop an inside player to replace Kane’s production in paint. Will be right there at the front of the Division I title chase and a definite Schuylkill League playoff team. Division I title contender.

Panther Valley

Head coach: Rob Kovac (6th season)

Last season: 8-14, 2-12 Division I

Key losses: Natalie Vermillion, Morgan O’Brien, Brenna McAndrew

Key returners: Morgan Orsulak (sr.), Caroline Breslin (sr.), Lucy Kocha (jr.)

Key newcomers: Ace Aponte (fr.), Cienna Padora (soph.), Ajete Gjoca (jr.), Kathryn Breslin (fr.), Megan O’Brien (jr.), Danika Blazosky (soph.), Janessa Prudente (jr.), Paige Goida (soph.), Nicole Carrasquilo (soph.)

Outlook: Panthers return a strong nucleus, led by the trio of Orsulak, Caroline Breslin and Kocha. Need some underclassmen to step and fill starting roles and provide depth at varsity level. Qualifying for District 11 playoffs is an attainable goal.

Pine Grove

Head coach: Allison Rizzo (2nd season)

Last season: 14-9, 8-6 Division I. District 11 3A qualifier

Key losses: Ayla Schneck-Haines, Addison Zimmerman, Hannah Leininger

Key returners: Callee Leffler (sr., PG), Meadow Umbenhauer (jr., G/F), Hollyn Sampson (soph. C)

Key newcomers: Lainey Fidler (soph., G), Kam Heming (soph., G/F), Kendra Umbenhauer (soph., G/F), Addi Reichert (jr., G/F), Violet Verdensky (jr., F), Faith Gehres (fr., G), Juliet Brown (fr., G/F), Allura Lutz (fr., G).

Outlook: Cardinals improved by five wins in Rizzo’s first season at the helm and look to make the next step this season — qualifying for the Schuylkill League playoffs. Have good balance with Leffler and Meadow Umbenhauer on perimeter and Sampson inside. Goal is to be tough defensively. Need to find outside shooters and develop depth on bench. Should challenge for Schuylkill League playoff berth.

Pottsville

Head coach: Damian Fritz (1st season at Pottsville, 5th girls’ season overall)

Last season: 8-15, 5-9 Division I. District 11 5A qualifier

Key losses: Keirra Jones

Key returners: Jes Siminitus (sr., G), Jo Barnhart (jr., G), Myla Fegley (jr., G), Megan Goodman (soph., G)

Key newcomers: Lauren Brennan (jr., G), Riley Davis (soph., G), Ava Ciavarella (soph., F), Ella Huda (soph., F), Addy Skripko (fr., G), Takeira Curry (fr., F), Finley Rooney (fr., G)

Outlook: Fritz moves from Marian to Pottsville after compiling a 91-20 record (50-3 in league play) over the past four seasons with the Fillies, winning a pair of District 11 titles. He’ll look to install his defensive-minded style in a Pottsville program that will field an athletic and fast team this season. Tide will be young again with just one senior but have several players who excel in other sports. Pottsville needs to get scoring from its returning players and develop the work ethic known to make Fritz’s system successful. Could improve upon last year’s record. Finishing with a .500 or better overall record is an attainable goal.

Schuylkill Haven

Head coach: Tony Sanders (7th season)

Last season: 23-7, 11-3 Division I. Schuylkill League Division I runner-up, Schuylkill League overall champion, District 11 3A runner-up, PIAA 3A second round

Key losses: Alea Porter, Anna Schaeffer, Faith Goehring

Key returners: Audrey Hutchinson (sr., G/F), McKenna Runkle (jr., G/F), Kylie Siket (jr., G), Ava Terefencko (jr., G/F), Octavia Houvig (soph., F), Tessa Benedict (soph., F), Braelynn Strencoski (soph., C)

Key newcomers: Madison Bayer (fr., F), Madelyn Kovaleski (fr., F), Abby Farrell (fr., G), Aubree Brand (fr., G/F), Aubrie Wade (fr., G/F)

Outlook: Hurricanes return four key pieces from last year’s squad that won the first Schuylkill League girls’ title in program history. Hutchinson, Siket and Terefencko provide outside scoring and points in transition while Runkle is one of the top all-around players in the league. Must replace Schaeffer’s ability to deliver in clutch. Haven’s depth will also be tested as three key bench players from last season did not come out for the team this season. Have the talent to repeat as league champions but will be tested by North Schuylkill, Tamaqua and Pine Grove in Division I race. Enter season as Division I favorite. Definite league playoff contender.

Tamaqua

Head coach: Erika Davis (11th season)

Last season: 18-7, 9-5 Division I. Division I wild card, Schuylkill League semifinalist, District 11 4A qualifier

Key losses: Kolbe Robb, Samantha Plasha

Key returners: Lauren Ligenza (jr., F), Kendle Miller (sr., G/F), Leah Black (sr., F), Millie Black (soph., F)

Key newcomers: Ceanna Gormley (sr., F), Makenna Ellington (sr., G), Mia Bamford (jr., G), Gabby Osenbach (jr., G), Nico Conahan (soph., G)

Outlook: Blue Raiders return one of the tallest teams with Ligenza, Leah Black and Millie Black in the paint and Miller on the wing. Biggest challenge is finding a point guard to run the offense with the graduation of Robb. Must also develop some outside shooting. Blue Raiders’ experience and talent put them in the top tier of the league. If things go right, they could contend for Division I title. League playoff contender.
