MAHANOY CITY — Felicia Bro etched her name among the Mahanoy Area girls’ basketball greats by scoring her 1,000th career point in Wednesday’s 65-47 non-league victory over Panther Valley at the Joe Alansky Gymnasium.

Bro finished with a game-high 28 points, draining five 3-pointers and shooting 7-for-8 from the foul line. Ella Connolly added 22 points as the Bears opened the game with a 17-6 run and led by 19 points after three frames.

Ajete Gjoca led Panther Valley with 11 points while Caroline Breslin tallied 10 points and Morgan Orsulak had nine points and 12 rebounds.

HALIFAX — Mallory Miller and Ireland Kasper each had six points in a 19-9, third-quarter run that lifted the Vikings past the Wildcats in Williams Valley’s season opener.

Quin Smeltz had a game-high 19 points for Williams Valley, scoring 10 in the first half to give the Vikes a 19-16 lead at intermission. Miller finished with 17, scoring 10 in the second half.

Meadow Umbenhauer scored 15 points and Hollyn Sampson tallied 13 for Pine Grove, which led 24-12 at intermission. Schuylkill Valley responded with a 25-8 run in the third quarter, outscoring the Cards 40-14 in the second half.

MINERSVILLE — The Miners unleashed a 32-point third quarter to break open a tight game and hand new head coach Chris George his first victory in a non-league game at Thomas Fitzpatrick Gymnasium.

Shazier Bethea powered the Miners with 26 points, Jordan Bowers added 21, Chase Zimerofsky scored 13 and Nolan Plesnarski knocked down a trio of 3-pointers on his way to nine points.

Shenandoah Valley was led by Niko White (18 points) and Izayah Lopez (17 points), but the Blue Devils couldn’t match Minersville’s second-half surge.

TAMAQUA — Shaylee Gormley and Savannah Wilson each won two individual events and swam on two winning relays to power the Blue Raiders to a Schuylkill League win over the Golden Bears.

Gormley won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Wilson touched first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Katie Behun (100 free) and Lyla Clemson (500 free) also added individual wins for Tamaqua (1-0, 1-0 SL).

Lily Brown (50 free, 100 back) won a pair of events for Mahanoy Area (0-1, 0-1).
