HS Boys’ Basketball: Minersville, Nativity, Haven and Pottsville pick up victories

ORWIGSBURG — Shazier Bethea continues to dazzle.

Bethea, a senior, scored game-high 21 points and Minersville remained unbeaten with a 54-44 win over Blue Mountain in a Schuylkill League Division I matchup on Monday at Blue Mountain High School.

The Battlin’ Miners trailed 13-7 after the first quarter but steadily took control behind Bethea’s shot-making and a balanced supporting cast. 

Chase Zimerofsky hit two 3-pointers on his way to 10 points, while Shane Fessler and Nolan Plesnarski combined for four more triples as Minersville outscored the Eagles 47-31 over the final three periods.

Blue Mountain was led by Tyeirre Meade’s 19 points, with Cohen Kirby and Cohen Werner adding eight apiece, but the Eagles struggled to match Minersville’s perimeter surge late.

Schuylkill Haven 60, Weatherly 58

WEATHERLY — Alan Evans netted a game-high 19 points and Schuylkill Haven held off Weatherly in a tight Division II game that featured big swings on both sides.

Bradyn Diehl chipped in 15 points and Justin Watcher added 12 for the Hurricanes, which used a 20-point fourth quarter to fend off the Wreckers’ late charge.

Weatherly received 17 points from Dom Kokinda, 14 from Niko Saldukas and 10 from Corbin Wagner.

HOMETOWN — Trey Keating delivered another dominant performance, pouring in game-high 33 points to carry Nativity past Marian in Division II play.

Keating hit six 3-pointers and scored 19 of his points in the second half as the Hilltoppers used a 19-6 third quarter to break open a one-point game. Nick Clarke added 12 points for Nativity, who won its first game under first-year coach Brady Burke.

Marian stayed within reach behind Jacob De La Cruz’s 13 points and Jake Tom’s 12.

LANSFORD — Connor Bowman erupted for a game-high 27 points, including five 3-pointers, to lift Mahanoy Area past Panther Valley in a Division I thriller.

Ryan Zilker collected 16 points as the Bears used a 26-point third quarter to seize momentum. 

Panther Valley rallied late behind Brody Breiner’s season-high 23 points, followed by 13 from Danny Wehr.

POTTSVILLE — Christian Alvarez collected a game-high 24 points as Pottsville stayed perfect in Division I by cruising past Tamaqua at Martz Hall.

The Crimson Tide opened the game on a 17–2 run and never looked back, with the defense holding Tamaqua to single digits in two separate quarters. Davey Kunstek added 10 points for Pottsville.

Tamaqua was led by Chance Makovec with 12 points.

COAL TWP. — Tri-Valley lit up the scoreboard behind three players in double figures and pulled away early to defeat Lourdes in a high-paced Division II matchup.

The Bulldogs exploded for 46 first-half points and never looked back. Trey Porter scored 22 points, Kingsley Johnson added 21, and Braeden Doyle poured in a game-high 27, including four 3-pointers, as Tri-Valley controlled the tempo from the opening tip.

Lourdes was led by Gavem Renn’s 15 points and Brighton Sciccitano’s team-high 24.
