ORWIGSBURG — Shyanna White stood on the diving board for what seemed like an eternity.

She was about to attempt her toughest dive … one that she ended up landing flat on her back during practice the day before.

The Blue Mountain senior calmly advanced out the board and nailed the reverse 1.5-somersault dive, bringing a loud cheer from her teammates and the crowd in attendance.

It was part of a big day for White at Saturday’s second Schuylkill League Diving Invitational at Blue Mountain’s Glen Belmont Natatorium.

White won the girls’ title with 269.95 points, while Pottsville senior Adam Klinger cruised to his second crown with a school- and pool-record 485.15 points in the 11-dive competition. It’s the second straight year the Schuylkill League has put together the event, which serves as a chance for the league’s divers to post a district-qualifying score.

“I probably never would have thought I’d ever win, being completely honest,” White said. “I thought I was going to fail two dives today. My back 1.5 and my reverse 1.5, I was terrified. So yeah, it feels weird.”

Only seven divers competed Saturday — five girls and two boys. Defending girls’ champion Hailey Scheuer of Blue Mountain, a two-time Schuylkill League champion and last year’s District 11 Class AA champion, did not compete due to illness.

That opened the door for White, who was third at last year’s invitational, also affectionately called the Frozen Flip Fest. She struggled early, getting a minimum score of 9.75 on her third dive after completing the dive in the wrong position.

White used solid dives in rounds 4-6 to gain the lead. She scored 26.25 on the reverse 1.5-somersault in Round 7. Two rounds later, she scored 34.10 points on a forward, two-somersault dive that all but clinched the crown.

On both of those later dives, White spent an extended amount on the board before attempting the dive.

“I was standing there praying that I don’t slap my back on the water because it’s painful … like extremely,” White said of her seventh dive. “Yesterday at practice I was warming up my reverse 1.5 for today and the last one I hit I completely landed flat on my back.”

Blue Mountain sophomore Molly Stone was second with 221.65 points, followed by Blue Mountain sophomore Ana Oettl (209.40), North Schuylkill sophomore Parker Drum (188.95) and Blue Mountain sophomore Sarah Satterfield (165.75).

White was second at the Schuylkill League Diving Championships last season and took third at the District 11 Class AA Diving Championships. Her point total Saturday surpassed the 240 points needed to qualify for this year’s district meet.

She said having a meet like Saturday’s is a great warm-up for the diving postseason.

“I feel like it’s good to have an 11-dive meet especially before leagues, because it’s good practice before you actually make it there,” White said. “It’s long, you sit and waiting, you’re nervous for all your dives. It’s a good confidence boost to know you can do your 11 dives before you have to do them at leagues. It’s really good practice.”

For Klinger, Saturday’s competition serves as a measuring stick for his quest to return to the podium at the PIAA Diving Championships at Bucknell University.

The defending District 11 Class AA champion and PIAA Class AA bronze medalist had one small hiccup in the fourth round but was otherwise dominant, scoring 41 or more points on nine of his 11 dives and 54 or more on two of those. Teammate Spencer Prestileo was second with 246.10 points, also qualifying for districts.

Klinger’s point total easily dusted last year’s invitational score of 400.70, which was the Glen Belmont Natatorium record. His overall total also blew past his previous school record of 453, set last year.

“As a measuring stick, I have a standard set now for my 11-dive score,” Klinger said. “I have a couple of 11-dive meets coming up in Allentown and the league championships coming up. My goal now is to beat 500 by that time.

“I know what dives I have to work on. In my first five dives, my third and fourth dives were definitely questionable. I did not do well on those. I have a lot of things to work on.”

Klinger scored 55.20 points on his seventh dive, a reverse 1.5-somersault from the pike position, and 54.60 points on his ninth dive, a forward 2.5-somersault from the pike position that carried a degree of difficulty of 2.6.

For the Seton Hall signee, Saturday was the first step toward what he hopes is another state medal.

“I think I bounced back well from my third and fourth dives … my fifth dive wasn’t the best as well,” Klinger said. “I have certain tweaks to do.”
