SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — The size difference was noticeable in warmups, and it became overwhelming once the ball went up.

Delone Catholic used size, depth and a punishing second quarter to pull away from Schuylkill Haven for a 77-46 victory in the PIAA Class AA First Round at the CACL Center on Saturday afternoon.

“Delone dominated the middle of the game,” Schuylkill Haven coach Fran Murphy said. “They had a cluster of buckets toward the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half. They turned us into a one-shot team — we would shoot, they would rebound — and we were limited to perimeter shots. They did a great job rebounding.”

The Squires (23-1) turned a 15-5 first-quarter edge into a 40-25 halftime cushion, then steadily widened the gap behind 6-foot-7 senior Luke Rebert, who poured in a game-high 24 points and controlled the paint on both ends.

The visual difference was hard to ignore.

With multiple players 6-foot-3 and above — including Rebert, Griffin Collins (6-1), Collin Redding (6-1), Liam O’Brien (6-3) and Will Smith (6-1) — the Squires presented matchup problems all night for Haven’s interior anchored by senior Max Heim (6-3) and junior Brady Kelly (6-1). Delone consistently won the battle on the glass and converted second-chance opportunities into points.

Justin Watcher led Schuylkill Haven (17-9) with 18 points, knocking down four 3-pointers and attacking the rim in transition. Heim added 13 points in his final game, Alan Evans contributed six and Kelly chipped in five.

The decisive stretch came in the second quarter.

After Haven trimmed the deficit to 29-19 on a Kelly 3-pointer off a steal by Evans, Delone responded with an 11-6 run fueled by Jack Martin and Rebert. A baseline drive and dunk from Rebert ignited the Squires, who closed the half ahead 40-25.

The third quarter briefly offered hope. Watcher sparked a push with a pair of 3-pointers and transition baskets to cut the deficit to 47-39 late in the frame. But each time Haven threatened, Delone answered — usually through Rebert inside or timely perimeter shooting from O’Brien and Martin.

Rebert opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back finishes, including a hesitation move in traffic and a putback off his own miss, stretching the margin beyond 20 and effectively ending the comeback bid.

Late in the game came an unusual sequence.

With just over five minutes remaining, Delone briefly had six players on the floor during a possession that ended with a made 3-pointer. The mistake did not impact the outcome, but it did not go unnoticed. The CACL Center crowd erupted in protest, voicing its displeasure loudly for nearly 20 seconds before play continued following a timeout by Delone coach Brandon Staub. The uproar may have been loud enough to disrupt lunch hour at the Manheim Diner.

It was a rare officiating hiccup in an otherwise decisive performance by the Squires.

Delone shot efficiently and held Haven to just five points in the opening quarter, setting the tone early.

The Squires’ physicality and size advantage once again touched on a familiar postseason conversation — the public versus private school debate that resurfaces each March. On this afternoon, the private-school power simply had too much length, depth and execution.

For Schuylkill Haven, the loss closes the book on a strong season that included a District 11 Class AA championship — the program’s first since 1997 — just one week ago.

Heim, the Hurricanes’ lone senior, exits as both a district champion and the steady interior presence who helped anchor Haven’s resurgence. The future, however, remains bright. Sophomore Bradyn Diehl joins juniors Watcher, Evans and Kelly among a strong returning core, along with a host of underclassmen who gained valuable experience this season.

“I think being successful creates more success — it’s a snowball effect,” Murphy said. “If you’re not successful, things can kind of wind down on you, so we’ve been fortunate enough to have kids who put in the time to get better. Justin Watcher is a great example of that. From his sophomore to junior year, he made great leaps.”

Despite the final margin, the Hurricanes again showed resilience — cutting a 17-point deficit to single digits in the third before Delone’s depth ultimately wore them down.

“This afternoon, our boys did not quit,” Murphy said. “They played hard right till the end. What else can you ask for as a coach?”

When the benches emptied in the final minute, Haven walked off knowing the foundation remains strong — even if the final step of this season proved too tall to clear.
