Colonial League squads sweep team titles
TAMAQUA —- Alexa Giuffre continues to dominate the local track and field circuit.
The Pottsville senior won three more times Saturday, capturing the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump at the Tamaqua Invitational.
This week’s Fanelli, Evans & Patel T102 Sports Now Athlete of the Week, Giuffre cruised to victory in the 100 hurdles by more than a second over second-place Ruby Walters of Palmerton, crossing the tape in 15.48 seconds.
Giuffre won the long jump with a best attempt of 17 feet, 8 inches, then leaped 36-3 to take first in the triple jump. She nearly won a fourth event, placing second to Lehighton’s Lilyana Shapiro in the 200 meters.
Giuffre was the only Schuylkill League track and field athlete to win three times at the 14-team competition that was dominated predominantly by Colonial League teams Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Northwestern Lehigh and Palmerton. Other Schuylkill League teams competing were Mahanoy Area, Marian, Nativity, Panther Valley, Pine Grove, Schuylkill Haven, Tamaqua and Weatherly.
Northwestern Lehigh secured the girls’ team title with 117 points, edging Lehighton (114) and Palmerton (112). Pottsville was the highest finishing Schuylkill League team, taking fourth with 97.5 points.
In addition to Giuffre, other Schuylkill League girls’ event winners included Tamaqua’s Katelynn Fredericks in the 300 hurdles, Pottsville’s Myla Fegley in the high jump and Nativity’s Emmalee Pinkey in the shot put.

On the boys’ side, Pottsville’s Donovann Durham was a double-winner, sweeping the hurdle events. The Crimson Tide’s Shay Strencosky (100) and Colin McGinley (800) were also gold-medal winners, helping Pottsville place third in the team standings behind Jim Thorpe and Lehighton.
In addition to the Pottsville athletes, Schuylkill League winners on the track included Nativity’s Robert McDonald in the 200 meters and Tamaqua’s Aidan Elston in the 1600.
In the field events, Mahanoy Area’s Connor Bowman cleared a personal-best 5-10 to take home the title in the high jump, Pine Grove’s Dane Hannevig leaped 21-9.75 to win the long jump and Schuylkill Haven’s Niko Carestia heaved the javelin 169 feet to take first in that event.
