Hoffman-Long, Miller have big nights for Miners
PINE GROVE — Big performances by Maggie Hoffman-Long and Avery Miller propelled Minersville to the girls’ team championship Friday at the annual Pine Grove Track and Field Invitational at Cardinal Stadium.
Hoffman-Long took first in the long jump, Miller captured the javelin and Minersville won the 4×800-meter relay on the way to compiling 91 points in a field of 19 girls’ squads. The Miners easily out-pointed second-place Pocono Mountain West, which had 69 points.
Both Hoffman-Long and Miller earned a trio of top-five finishes.
Hoffman-Long won the long jump with a top leap of 17 feet, 7 inches, edging Pottsville’s Alexa Guiffre (17-6) in a battle of two of the top girls’ long jumpers in the state. Hoffman-Long was also second in the 100 meters behind Catasauqua star Hailey Jenkins and second in the triple jump behind Millersburg’s Kate Rothermel.
Miller heaved the javelin 107-5 to capture first place, was third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. The Miners were also third in the 4×100 relay and Marley Zimmerman was fourth in both the 1600 and 3200.
Schuylkill League athletes won eight of the 17 girls’ events (there wasn’t a pole vault event). North Schuylkill’s Genevieve Dando was a double-winner, taking first in the 1600 and 3200. Tamaqua’s Shaylee Gormley won the 800, her Blue Raiders’ teammate Katelynn Fredericks broke the tape in the 300 hurdles and the Pottsville 4×400 relay took first in 4:18.60.
Note: Names were unavailable for the winning relay teams.

On the boys’ side, Schuylkill League athletes won seven of the 17 events.
Marian’s Jacob Tom won a pair of events, taking first in the long jump and triple jump.
Pottsville and Schuylkill Haven each had a pair of champs, with Colin McGinley (800) and Donovann Durham (110 hurdles) earning gold for the Crimson Tide and Ethan Kline (shot put) and Niko Carestia (javelin) claiming titles for the Hurricanes.
Kline, who signed this week to compete in track and field at NCAA Division I Rider University, was also second in the discus.
Nativity and Pottsville waged a couple of relay battles, with Nativity edging Pottsville to win the 4×800 relay and the Tide outrunning the Green Wave for second place in the 4×400 relay.
Catasauqua stormed to the boys’ team title, winning six events, all on the track. Pocono Mountain West was second with 70 points, followed by Nativity, Shamokin and Pottsville.
