MINERSVILLE — Down, but never out, Schuylkill Haven did it again.

For the second time this season against Minersville, the Hurricanes overcame a big deficit to pull out a Schuylkill League Division II victory. Schuylkill Haven prevailed 9-5 in a 2-hour battle on a sparkling spring Thursday afternoon at Ken Schneck Field.

“They’re not doing it for anybody but themselves,” Schuylkill Haven coach Garry Adams said. “… They are working together to play as one unit. We’ve had some better teams over the years, but this team, they don’t quit. They don’t quit. They don’t know what the word ‘quit’ is.”

In the first meeting this season, the Hurricanes rallied from deficits of 4-0 and 7-4 to defeat Minersville 12-11 on March 31.

In the rematch, Minersville (9-7, 6-4 D-II) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. In the first inning, Grace Sterner (3-for-4, 3 runs) led off with a triple and scored on Rilynn Brennan’s bunt single. Later, Calleigh Tripp added an RBI single to make it 3-0. In the second inning, Sara McGrath (2-for-3) singled home Sterner to extend the lead to 4-0.

Schuylkill Haven (10-6, 7-3) chipped away but still trailed 5-2 after four innings. Kate Russo’s sacrifice fly and Joie Schoffstall’s RBI single helped the Hurricanes close the gap.

In the fifth, Schuylkill Haven got its timing down fully against Minersville starter Eila O’Brien, batting around and scoring five runs to go ahead to stay at 7-5. Aisley Jenan’s RBI double and Danica Snyder’s two-run single were the key hits. Snyder finished the day 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Schoffstall (2-for-4) and Braelynn Strenkoski (2-for-4) added RBI singles in the rally.

That’s when Adams went to the bullpen, calling on Alli Scherer to come on in relief of winning pitcher Schoffstall. All Scherer did was hurl three no-hit, no run innings to earn the save. She struck out five and walked two.

The Hurricanes added two insurance runs in the seventh. Snyder blasted an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Olivia Houvig added a 3-for-4 day with a double and a run scored out of the No. 9 spot in the batting order. Schuylkill Haven finished with 14 hits.

With the win, Schuylkill Haven qualified for the District 11 Class AA playoffs and took a big step toward earning one of the six spots in the Schuylkill League playoffs (three from each division). The Hurricanes completed the season sweep of Minersville, so they’ll have the tiebreaker should they finish deadlocked.

Once 3-5 this season, Schuylkill Haven has gone 7-1 since April 8.

“It’s all about unity, and this team has stayed unified,” Adams said. “There has been no squawking between this team at all, which is very rare. That’s what I love about this team.

“That was a hard-fought game, and I may have grown older through it, but I absolutely enjoy this team,” Adams added. “I love this team.”
