T102 Sports Now Super 7 Softball Poll: Cardinals retain top spot

Believe it or not, just two weeks remain in the Schuylkill League softball season.
And nothing’s been settled yet. More on that in a moment.
What we do know is that several teams are starting to play really good ball, and that’s reflected in this week’s T102 Sports Now Super 7 Softball Poll.
Pine Grove Area (15-1) outscored Tamaqua and Pottsville by a combined 25-0 last week in eight innings. That was plenty to keep the Cardinals at No. 1.
Blue Mountain (15-1) won at North Schuylkill, trounced Mahanoy Area and shut out Hazleton Area on the road. That’s a really good week and solidifies the Eagles at No. 2.
That could all change Tuesday evening when Pine Grove visits North Schuylkill for the second go-around in the Division I schedule. The Spartans won the first meeting this season on April 2.
Speaking of the Spartans, North Schuylkill (12-3) remains at No. 3. But they’re not alone. Williams Valley (14-1) blanked Line Mountain, Shenandoah Valley and Weatherly by a combined 49-0 last week in 11 innings. That lifts the Vikings into a tie with North Schuylkill for No. 3.
Tri-Valley (10-4) had a busy, but productive, week, finishing a win at Pottsville, knocking off Schuylkill Haven at home and shutting out Nativity. The Bulldogs are a solid No. 5.
Schuylkill Haven (10-6) split its games, falling to Tri-Valley but rallying for a win at Minersville. The Hurricanes stay at No. 6.
Tamaqua (9-7) re-enters the poll at No. 7 after beating Executive Education and Lourdes but falling to Pine Grove. The Blue Raiders have defeated Schuylkill Haven and Tri-Valley in non-league games this season.
Heading into the week, Blue Mountain and Pine Grove share the top spot in Division I with 9-1 records. North Schuylkill is just a game back at 8-2. Those three are likely to make the Schuylkill League playoffs, which begin May 11. The order? Well, that’s anyone’s guess at this point.
In Division II, Williams Valley (10-0) has opened a two-game lead on Tri-Valley (8-2). The Vikings have a pivotal week ahead, hosting Northern Lehigh on Monday, visiting Schuylkill Haven on Tuesday and hosting Tri-Valley on Thursday in a game that will be broadcast live on WPPA 1360 AM/A-105.9 FM (JZ and Bob Lipsky will have the call). Schuylkill Haven (7-3) and Minersville (6-4) are also in the running as the top three teams in each division qualify for the league playoffs. The Hurricanes, though, have the tiebreaker over Minersville by virtue of sweeping the Miners this season.
The division champions receive a bye into the Schuylkill League semifinals, so winning the division could improve a team’s path to the league crown.
The T102 Sports Now Super 7 Softball Poll normally appears each Monday during the regular season.
