Weekend Track Wrap: Giuffre, Miller, Hoffman-Long have big nights at Friday invitationals

ORWIGSBURG — Alexa Giuffre put on another show, Donovann Durham blazed to a pair of wins, Tamaqua’s Shaylee Gormley grabbed a gold and field event standouts Dane Hannevig, William Shaner and Sophia Woll posted victories at Friday’s 21-team Blue Mountain Invitational at the Eagles’ Nest.

Giuffre won three events as the Pottsville senior took first in the 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Her time of 45.51 seconds in the 300 hurdles and her best attempt in the long jump of 18 feet, 9 inches were season-bests.

Durham captured a pair of battles with Schuylkill League rival Rafael Liranzo of Blue Mountain, winning the 110 hurdles in a season-best 14.42 and racing to victory in the 300 hurdles in another season-best time of 38.90. Liranzo was second in both events.

Gormley won the 800 meters in 2:28.07, just ahead of Blue Mountain’s Gianna Chipriano (2:28.87). The Pottsville girls’ 4×400 relay, the Blue Mountain girls’ 4×800 relay and the Blue Mountain boys’ 4×800 relay also earned gold medals. Names were not provided.

In addition to Liranzo and Chipriano, Blue Mountain’s Sophia Spolski (100, 200), Tamaqua’s Katelynn Fredericks (300 hurdles), Nativity’s Kyle McCormick (400) and Pottsville’s Colin McGinley (800) earned silver medals on the track.

In the field events, Blue Mountain’s Woll won the girls’ discus at 105-2, while the Eagles’ Shaner outlasted teammate Jeffrey Kline and Schuylkill Haven’s Niko Carestia to win the boys’ javelin.

Pine Grove’s Hannevig set an area-best with a best jump of 21-10.5 to win the long jump. Schuylkill Haven’s Ethan Kline was second in the boys’ discus with a season-best throw of 150-4.

Spartans’ Miller races to gold in 100

at Millersville’s Cy Fritz Open

MILLERSVILLE — North Schuylkill’s Luke Miller posted the area’s fastest time of the season en route to a gold medal in the 100 meters as the Spartans competed Friday at the Cy Fritz Open at Millersville University’s Biemesderfer Stadium.

Miller won the 100 in 10.63 seconds, was second in the 200 meters in 21.83 and teamed with Daniel Brake, Julian Nelson and Caden Mengel to place second in the 4×100 relay in 42.85. Hershey’s Jake Weiler-Timmins won the 200 in 21.77.

In other top-10 finishes, Cameron Kacilowicz placed second in the boys’ 400, Lauren Powis took sixth in the girls’ high jump, Genevieve Dando finished seventh in the 1600 and the Spartans’ 4×800 girls’ relay of Alyzza Rockwell, Ka’ren-is Holmes, Carissa Ossman and Tatiana Salefski was eighth.

Athletes from 37 teams competed at the Cy Fritz Open, with most of the teams hailing from District 3. North Schuylkill and Bethlehem Liberty were the only District 11 teams in attendance.

Hoffman-Long earns Field MVP honors at ESS Cavalier Invitational

EAST STROUDSBURG — Minersville’s Maggie Hoffman-Long won a pair of events and was named girls’ Field MVP at the 15-team ESS Cavalier Invitational held Friday at East Stroudsburg South.

Hoffman-Long won the long jump with a top leap of 17 feet, 5.5 inches, then took first in the triple jump at 35-11.25. She was also fourth in the 200 meters and teamed with Alya Allvord, Allie Pennypacker, Ivy Sankus to take sixth in the 4×100 relay.

Avery Miller also had a big day for the Miners, placing second in the javelin, third in the shot put and seventh in the discus. Alyssa Cook was third in the pole vault; Anna Cook took fifth in the 800 and eighth in the 1600; Marley Zimmerman was fifth in the 3200; and the quartet of Jenna Cullen, Anna Cook, Ava Bosack and Zimmerman was second in the 4×800 relay.

On the boys’ side, Minersville won the 4×800 relay as Chase Zimerofsky, Johnny Burgess, Grady McGovern and MacKaiden Sinko finished in 8:32.69.

McGovern was second in the 400, while Aidan Ryan (high jump) and Zimerofsky (triple jump) notched a pair of fourth-place finishes.

The Minersville girls were fourth in the team standings behind Milton, Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg south. The Miners boys placed seventh, with Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg South and Pocono Mountain West taking the top three spots.
