Boys’ Basketball: Dawgs, Miners, Tide earn District 11 tourney top seeds

Three Schuylkill League teams are seeded No. 1 in their respective classifications for the upcoming District 11 Boys’ Basketball Tournament.
District 11 unveiled the brackets for both its boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments Sunday afternoon. All total, 11 Schuylkill League teams qualified for the boys’ tournament.
Tri-Valley, Schuylkill League champion Minersville and Schuylkill League runner-up Pottsville earned No. 1 seeds in their classes. The Dawgs (20-3) head a four-team Class AA field that also includes No. 2 Schuylkill Haven (15-8) and No. 3 Marian (10-12). The Class AA bracket begins Wednesday, Feb. 25, with semifinal action.
The Miners (23-1), fresh off their overtime win over Pottsville in Friday’s Schuylkill League championship game, drew a quarterfinal bye in the seven-team Class 3A bracket and won’t play until the semifinals Wednesday, Feb. 25. No. 5 Mahanoy Area (9-13) and No. 7 Williams Valley (9-13) will compete in quarterfinal games Saturday, Feb. 21.
Defending District 11 Class 5A champion Pottsville (18-7) begins its title defense with a quarterfinal round game Friday, Feb. 20, against No. 8 Jim Thorpe (10-12) at 7:30 p.m. at Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain is No. 2 in the eight-team Class 5A subregional with District 4. The Eagles (16-8) face No. 7 Shikellamy (11-11) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at Martz Hall.
Action gets underway Tuesday with first-round action, followed by quarterfinals Feb. 20-21, semifinals Feb. 24-25 and championship/consolation games Feb. 27-28.
First-round games are held at the higher seeds, with quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games held at neutral sites. Advance tickets are available online only by visiting the District 11 website, www.districtxi.org.
Advance tickets cost $8 (including fees) unless otherwise noted. Advanced ticket sales will end one hour prior to the scheduled start of the event (if the event is part of a doubleheader/tripleheader advance sales end one hour prior to the first game).
Tickets will be available at the gate for purchase and can be purchased online or with cash, all tickets at the gate are $10. Spectators 65 years of age and older are admitted free with proof of age.
