HS Girls’ Wrestling: PV’s Banks breezes to Southeast Region gold

Brenda Banks, Panther Valley
QUAKERTOWN — Nothing seems to bother Brenda Banks or throw her off her game.
Not a super-early wake-up call and weigh-in (7:30 a.m. on a Sunday).
Not being ready to wrestle at 8:30 in the morning.
Not with a heavy snowstorm approaching.
And not with the pressure of trying to become a four-time state champion.
Banks, Panther Valley’s star senior 235-pounder, seems to take each match as it comes. She knows how to relax and get her mind right between bouts, and she knows how and when to unleash her power and skills once the whistle blows.
That’s how it went again Sunday at the Southeast Regional Girls’ Wrestling Championships at Quakertown High School. Banks notched three quick pins to capture the 235-pound title and move closer to her goal of becoming a four-time state champ (she has one non-PIAA and two PIAA golds so far).
Panther Valley senior teammate Alisa Williams (170) placed fourth, while Pine Grove’s Geanna Lemke (142), Rileigh Purcell (190) and Audrey Graeff (235) finished fifth.
The top four placewinners in each weight class qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships, set for March 5-7 at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Banks (33-0) blitzed through her bracket, pinning Upper Perkiomen’s Leila Lopez in 22 seconds, Council Rock’s Makenzie O’Donnell in 26 seconds and Strath Haven’s Kindal Bizzell-Brown in 31 seconds. Banks upped her career record to 106-2.

Williams (31-7) qualified for states by reaching the semifinals, then pinning Academy Park’s Amina Kromah in 1:48 in the consolations. Harry S. Truman’s Jada Akins defeated Williams 5-2 in a bronze-medal bout.
In fifth-place matches, Lemke (31-5) pinned William Tennent’s Yasmina Ergashova in 4:28; Purcell (21-10) edged Coatesville’s Jaylynn Reeder 1-0; and Graeff (11-8) decked Souderton’s Awur Mayom in 1:13.
