POTTSVILLE — Minersville’s season came to a close Saturday afternoon at Martz Hall.
Catasauqua used a decisive second-quarter run and answered every late push to defeat the Battlin’ Miners 64-57 in a District 11 Class 3A consolation game.
The Rough Riders (21-7) turned a one-point deficit after the first quarter into a four-point halftime lead, opening the second on a 10-0 run sparked by Aalani Nix and Luis Pujols. Chris Lopez added a pair of 3-pointers during the surge as Catasauqua built a 24-15 advantage midway through the quarter.
Minersville (23-3) never let it spiral too far out of reach.
Shazier Bethea carried the offense throughout, finishing with a game-high 29 points. He scored from all three levels — powering inside, knocking down two 3-pointers and going 9-for-11 at the foul line — repeatedly trimming the deficit whenever Catasauqua threatened to pull away.
After trailing 26-22 at the half, Minersville cut it to one early in the third on a Nolan Plesnarski corner 3, but the Rough Riders responded behind Nix and Lopez to stretch the lead back to double digits.
Bethea ignited another rally late in the third, scoring nine points in the final minutes to bring the Miners within 46-40 entering the fourth.

The final quarter turned into a possession-by-possession battle. Jordan Bowers scored 13 points and helped Minersville claw within one at 48-47 with just over five minutes remaining. Bethea later trimmed it to 50-49 and again to 55-53 inside the final two minutes.
Each time, Catasauqua answered.
Pujols converted a three-point play with 48.0 remaining to push the lead to five, and the Rough Riders sealed it at the foul line down the stretch.
Nix led Catasauqua with 18 points, Pujols added 15 and Lopez scored 13. Jenkins chipped in 12 as the Rough Riders converted 15-of-22 free throws.
Minersville’s season will be remembered as one of the most historic runs in program history.

In Chris George’s first year at the helm, the Battlin’ Miners captured their first Schuylkill League championship and posted their most impressive regular-season mark since the famed 1966 “Fab Five” finished 22-0. The 2025-26 group reestablished the standard in Minersville, blending toughness, scoring punch and a curveball-like defense throughout a 23-win campaign.
There was also a sense of déjà vu at Martz Hall. For the second straight year, the Miners’ district journey ended against Catasauqua on the same floor where they fell in the 2025 D-11 Class 3A championship game — a familiar sting in a building that otherwise produced so many highs this winter.
The run also marked the final chapter for a senior class that helped reshape the program’s trajectory, led by Bethea along with fellow seniors Brandon Adams, Shane Fessler, Plesnarski and Jake Mealey — a group that leaves behind both a banner and a foundation for what comes next.
