HS Baseball: Division II set for competitive spring

Michael Terefencko, Schuylkill Haven baseball
Schuylkill League Division II should again be one of the most competitive races in the area this spring, with several programs believing they have a realistic path to the top of the standings.
Last season, Schuylkill Haven finished on top of the division with a perfect 14-0 record in league play, while Shenandoah Valley (10-4) and Minersville (9-5) also qualified for the Schuylkill League playoffs. With a strong mix of returning talent, developing programs and several teams with postseason experience, the race in 2026 could be even tighter.
“Division II this year is going to be an absolute grind,” Nativity coach Ben Kreiger said. “There are a lot of teams in this division that can and will be competitive and in the running for the Schuylkill League championship. We’re working hard day in and day out to be the best we can be and to compete every time we step on the field. It feels like a toss-up every year in Division II, and this year is no different. It’s really wide open for the taking.”
Nativity enters the season with plenty of momentum after winning the District 11 Class A championship and advancing to the PIAA semifinals last year. The Hilltoppers return a large group of contributors from that run, including Ryan Grabowski, Stephen Karinch and Tommy Bartashus. Trey Keating also rejoins the lineup this season. With experience and confidence from a deep postseason run, Nativity has the pieces to challenge for a league playoff spot and will be back in the district playoffs.
Marian also returns a strong nucleus after finishing 8-6 in the division and reaching the District 11 Class AA quarterfinals last season. Players such as Cole Defrancisco, Ethan Labenburg, Chase Grier, Noah Bauder and Jimmy Cannon provide experience and leadership for a program that continues to take steps forward under coach John Petrilyak. The Colts have been tabbed by local lawn chair managers as a team to watch this season.

Shenandoah Valley is looking to remain among the division’s top teams despite retooling in a few spots. The Blue Devils reached the Schuylkill League quarterfinals and District 11 Class AA semifinals last year under first-year coach Frank McCole. They return key players including Chase McCole, Haden Kechula and Ethan Bench. As usual, Shenandoah Valley’s scrappy style and pitching depth should keep the Devils competitive throughout the season.
Minersville also finds itself in a bit of a retooling phase but still brings back several experienced players from last year’s District 11 Class AA semifinal team. Nolan Plesnarski, Cam Rogers, Garrett Sukeena and Jason Correll headline a group that will rely on pitching, defense and timely hitting to remain in the playoff picture.

Williams Valley features a roster heavy on underclassmen but plenty of potential. With returning players such as Gavin Deiter, John Rautzahn, Nolan Schaeffer and Fletcher Thompson, the Vikings could emerge as a sleeper contender if their young talent develops quickly.
Mahanoy Area is hoping to take another step forward in coach Kris Bet’s second season back as the Golden Bears’ skipper. A veteran group led by Brody Noraka, Joe Rick, Owen Ogrodnick and Derek Alvarado should help the Bears become more competitive as they look to cut down on errors and push toward a district playoff berth.

Schuylkill League play begins March 24, as D-II teams open a 14-game league schedule that runs through early May. The division features home-and-home series among all eight teams as programs battle for three spots in the Schuylkill League playoffs.
Haven looking to repeat
Schuylkill Haven once again enters the season as one of the teams to beat.
Legendary head coach Scott Buffington, now in his 49th season, returns a solid core including Landon Trostle, Michael Terefencko, Alan Evans, Chase Yoder and Chase Maley. With experience on the mound and depth throughout the lineup, the Hurricanes will attempt to defend their division title after last season’s perfect league record.
Repeating an undefeated run will be difficult in a balanced division, but Haven has the experience and pitching depth to once again compete near the top of the standings.
Weatherly begins new chapter
Weatherly enters the season under new head coach Jeremy Witner, who will look to establish a strong foundation for the program.
Experienced players such as Raymond Montz, Jeremiah Donadi, Kameron Jacoby and Corbin Wagner will be counted on to provide leadership while younger players gain experience. The focus early will be improving fundamentals and competing consistently as the Wreckers work to build toward future success.
District fields look different
The District 11 postseason picture has also shifted slightly this spring.
In Class AA, the field is almost entirely made up of Schuylkill League teams. Executive Education Academy Charter from the Lehigh Valley joins Mahanoy Area, Marian, Minersville, Schuylkill Haven, Shenandoah Valley, Tri-Valley and Williams Valley in what should be a highly competitive bracket.
“It’s a good thing and it’s a tough thing,” Minersville coach Shane Spotts said. “We get to see all their guys and they get to see all our guys. I’ve been doing this a long time where there’s no surprises when it comes to the postseason, when you’re playing Division I opponents and things like that, because you basically know what they have and what you have. It’s tough to beat a team three times, both ways of that. If you beat a team twice in the regular season, or someone beats you twice in the regular season, it means nothing. Look back at our postseason history, some of the matchups and some of the outcomes. It’s a double-edged sword for sure.”
Meanwhile, Class A expands from its traditional four-team field to six teams this season. Bethlehem Christian and Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School join returning programs Moravian Academy, Nativity, Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg and Weatherly. The expanded field should make the district race more competitive than in past seasons when a league team often had a relatively direct path to the state playoffs.
Double first base coming
Another storyline around the league involves an upcoming rule change.
The double first-base rule, designed to improve safety on plays at first base, will become mandatory next season in the rulebook. Several teams around the league have already begun using the safety base during games and practices in preparation for the change.

If the Miners can settle into new roles and find consistency early, they have the experience and toughness to remain competitive in the league and district rankings.
