HS Baseball: Eagles erupt early, soar past Cardinals

Evan Setlock, Blue Mountain baseball

ORWIGSBURG — Blue Mountain didn’t just take control early — it made sure there was never any doubt.

The Eagles seized momentum from the opening inning and never let Pine Grove recover, pairing an explosive start with a dominant pitching performance and steady defense to secure a 7-1 Schuylkill League Division I victory Tuesday at Allen Greenawalt Field.

“We want to be aggressive,” Blue Mountain coach Jarrod Kramer said. “We have good speed, like we’ve talked about. We want to put pressure on their pitchers, pressure on their defense and try to limit our strikeouts and put the ball in play hard.”

Brady Strause, Blue Mountain baseball

Blue Mountain (9-1, 5-1) wasted no time applying pressure, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sonny Amato jump-started the rally with a two-run single, and Evan Setlock followed with another two-run hit to quickly build a commanding cushion.

That early surge carried into the second. Aiden Finn added an RBI single to extend the advantage, pushing the lead to six runs and putting Pine Grove (5-8, 3-3) in an immediate hole.

“We ran the bases aggressively,” Kramer said. “We’ve been getting on base, but we haven’t been cashing runs in when we have runners in scoring position, but we did today. Pine Grove’s scrappy, we knew they’d play us tough. We figured we were going to get (Wyatt) Snyder, and our guys were ready to go. They were focused, they were motivated, and Evan did a great job again.”

From there, Setlock took over.

The right-hander delivered one of his most complete outings of the season, scattering five hits over seven innings while allowing just one unearned run. He struck out eight without issuing a walk, consistently working ahead in counts and preventing Pine Grove from generating any sustained offense.

Pine Grove’s best offensive spark came from Dane Hannevig, who collected three of the Cardinals’ five hits and was a constant presence on the bases. The Cardinals broke through with a run in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout but were unable to string together timely hits throughout the game.

Wyatt Snyder took the loss for Pine Grove, allowing seven runs — three earned — on seven hits over five innings. Hatter added a scoreless inning of relief.

Josh Hoover, Blue Mountain baseball

Blue Mountain’s lineup produced up and down the order, with timely hitting fueling the early surge. Finn led the way with two RBIs, while Amato and Setlock each drove in a pair during the Eagles’ four-run first inning. Sebastian, Brady Strause, Cohen Kirby, Frankie Russo, Mika Torola and Lucas Pritiskutch all added hits as Blue Mountain consistently put the ball in play and applied pressure.

Josh Hoover scored Ethan Hartman on a sacrifice fly for the Eagles.

Defensively, the Eagles backed their ace with clean play, turning two double plays and limiting Pine Grove’s chances to build any momentum.

“We want these guys to not be too full of themselves because this game can humble you really quick,” Kramer said. “We’ve seen it before where the best team doesn’t always win. We’ve been on that side of things many times. Our message is to take it one game at a time, one pitch at a time. Stay humble and stay hungry.”
