HS Girls’ Track: Miners stay perfect with victory over Pottsville

Eagles, Hurricanes, Spartans, Green Wave, Fillies also victorious

MINERSVILLE — Marley Zimmerman paced a Minersville sweep in the three distance running events as the Miners remained unbeaten with a 93-57 victory over Pottsville in a Schuylkill League Division I girls’ track and field dual meet Tuesday.

Zimmerman was first in the 800, 1600 and 3200 as Minersville scored all 27 points in those three events.

Maggie Hoffman-Long and Avery Miller were double-winners for the Miners (4-0, 3-0 D-I), who won 12 of 18 events. Miller dominated the discus and javelin.

Hoffman-Long and Pottsville’s Alexa Giuffre engaged in a pair of battles in the field events. Hoffman-Long edged Giuffre by three-quarters of an inch to win the long jump, while Giuffre took first in the triple jump.

Giuffre also swept the hurdles for Pottsville (1-2, 1-2).

PINE GROVE — Emma Lazarchick and Breilly Lazur each won a pair of events to lead the Eagles to a Schuylkill League Division I win at Cardinal Stadium.

Blue Mountain (3-1, 3-0 D-I) won or shared first place in all 17 contested events. Lazarchick captured the 800 and 1600, while Lazur raced to victory in the 200 and 100 hurdles.

Casie Reed won the triple jump and tied with teammate Piper Reinhart and Pine Grove’s Brinley Aungst for first place in the high jump. The Cardinals fell to 1-3 overall, 0-3 in league play.

TAMAQUA — Lauren Powis paced a dominating effort in the field events with a pair of wins as North Schuylkill fended off Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League Division I dual meet.

Powis won the high jump and discus as the Spartans (3-1, 2-1) won five of the seven field events. Mia McDonald added a win in the long jump, Emmy Pearce took first in the triple jump and Taylor Borkoskie notched the win in the javelin.

Molly Frantz was a double-winner on the track for North Schuylkill, while Genevieve Dando (1600 and Aubrey Krevinas (100 hurdles) added wins. Madelyn Schaefer (400), Shaylee Gormley (800), Katelynn Fredericks (300 hurdles), Ceanna Gormley (shot put) and Mikayah Steigerwalt (pole vault) were victorious for Tamaqua (0-3, 0-3).

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Ava Terefencko had a hand in four victories as the Hurricanes cruised to a Schuylkill League Division II win over the Panthers at Rotary Field.

Terefencko swept the hurdle events and ran on two winning relays for Schuylkill Haven (3-1, 3-1). Audrey Hutchinson (100, 200) and Bella Murphy (high jump, triple jump) also scored a pair of individual victories as Schuylkill Haven won 16 of 17 events.

Morgan Orsulak notched the only win for Panther Valley (0-3, 0-2), winning the long jump.

Fillies top Devils, Wreckers at Division II quad meet

POTTSVILLE — Madison Purcell and Catherine Marinchak each won three events as Nativity hosted a Division II quad meet with Marian, Shenandoah Valley and Weatherly at Pottsville’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Nativity ran past Shenandoah Valley 106-30, while Marian downed Weatherly 103-21 and Shenandoah Valley 90-40. Shenandoah Valley toppled Weatherly 78-25.

Purcell grabbed first in the 100, 400 and discus for Nativity (3-0, 3-0 D-II), while Marinchak won the 800, 1600 and 3200 and ran on a winning relay. Lily Baran was a double-winner, taking first in the 100 hurdles and triple jump.

Ashley Eduardo (200) and Shelianys Hernandez (300 hurdles) scored individual wins for Shenandoah Valley (1-4, 1-4). Addy Marek (high jump) and Ella Bones (long jump) were winners for Marian (2-1, 2-1), while Kelly Reiner dominated the javelin for Weatherly (0-5, 0-5).
