HS Track and Field: Schuylkill athletes shine at Roddick Invitational

Miller, Guers wage battle in sprints; Giuffre takes gold in triple jump
SHIPPENSBURG — The Schuylkill League is loaded with sensational track and field athletes this season.
Some of the league’s best proved they’re among the top athletes in the state Saturday at the prestigious 99th Roddick HS Invitational at Shippensburg University.
Athletes from Blue Mountain, Minersville, North Schuylkill and Pottsville competed in the 113-school competition, which draws elite competitors from across Pennsylvania.
Here’s a quick rundown:

• North Schuylkill’s Luke Miller and Blue Mountain waged a pair of wars in the boys’ sprinting events. The two Schuylkill League stars finished 1-2 in the 100 meters and 2-3 in the 200 meters, with Miller winning the 100 and Guers nipping Miller in the 200.
In the 100, Miller was clocked in 10.67 and Guers crossed in 10.71. In the 200, Parkland’s Radnor Rowlands won in 21.70, with Guers and Miller both posting 21.72 times.

• Pottsville’s Alexa Giuffre had a banner day, scoring three top-five finishes.
The senior standout won the triple jump with a season-best jump of 38 feet, 10.75 inches, was second in the long jump (18-1.25) and took fifth in the 100 hurdles in a season-best 15.20. Mid-Valley freshman Olivia Thomas won the long jump at 19-0.

• Pottsville’s Donovann Durham took fourth in the boys’ 110 hurdles in a season-best 14.60, with Blue Mountain’s Rafael Liranzo 10th in 15.30. In the 300 hurdles, Liranzo was 11th in 40.32, with Durham 12th in 40.52.

• The North Schuylkill boys’ 4×100 relay team of Daniel Brake, Julian Nelson, Caden Mengel and Luke Miller placed sixth in a school-record time of 42.73 seconds.

• Blue Mountain’s William Shaner took sixth in the javelin with a top throw of 173-5.

• Minersville’s Avery Miller was eighth in the javelin with a top throw of 109-6.

• In the 4×800 relay, the Blue Mountain girls were seventh while the Eagles’ boys were eighth.
