FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — North Schuylkill ace Brigid Flynn was cruising, retiring the first 11 Blue Mountain batters she faced.
The Eagles, though, adjusted their approach the second time through the lineup. With two outs in the fourth inning, seven straight Blue Mountain batters reached base, producing five runs on six hits that propelled the Eagles to a 6-4 victory over the Spartans in a Schuylkill League Division I first-place showdown under the lights Tuesday evening at Dot Seidel Field.
North Schuylkill (11-3, 7-2 D-I) struck first, using fundamental softball to take a 1-0 lead. Peyton Miscannon (2-for-3) led off the bottom of the third with a single, advanced on Alivia Fidler’s sacrifice bunt and scored when Lyza Holmes (2-for-4) blooped an infield single in front of the second base bag.
In the fourth, Blue Mountain’s Anna Borden broke up the perfect game with a two-out line single to right field. Hailey Place followed by slicing an RBI triple into the right-field corner that tied the game 1-1. Karley Koch reached on an error, extending the inning, and the Eagles (13-1, 8-1) took full advantage of the opportunity. Emmerson Frie singled, and Avery Hudock roped a two-run double to the gap in left-center to make it 4-1. Winning pitcher Emily Leonard added an RBI single to push the lead to 5-1.
“I think our M.O. is becoming second time through the lineup,” Blue Mountain coach Paul Leonard said. “It’s a good thing and a bad thing. You always want to jump (out to a lead), especially if you’re an away team. If you can get out in that first inning and jump on it, but Brigid is a heck of a pitcher. We faced her plenty of times. We chased a little bit in the first inning and got to see her the second time through the lineup. The girls had better approaches at the plate. We stayed calm and kept fighting.”
Emmerson Frie (2-for-3) blasted a solo home run to right-center in the sixth inning to give Blue Mountain a 6-1 lead. The homer was Frie’s second of the season.
North Schuylkill, though, refused to go down quietly. The Spartans sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, eventually bringing the potential winning run to the plate. Holmes and Gianna Capone delivered RBI singles as North Schuylkill kept passing the bat. With runners at first and second and two outs, Emily Leonard recorded her sixth strikeout of the game to end it.
“The Schuylkill League prepares you for the postseason,” Paul Leonard said. “Would we have liked to have shut the door in the seventh? Absolutely. But does that make us a better team going through that adversity moving forward? It sure does. You take the good with the bad. You want to shut that door, but seeing your girls respond in a hostile environment and be able to get that 21st out. We’ll take it.”
